Just found this out

Need to know... I was looking at my plumbing on tank and found that the person the did it used a screw down clamp on my punp to hose like you would use on a radiator hose. I noticed some rust on it and need to make sure this isnt or is an issue. Please let me know. Thanks for help in advance. Rezz...

Isn't GFO rust? said:
Yes it is and here is the definition: Iron(III) oxide or ferric oxide is the inorganic compound with the formula Fe2O3. It is of one of the three main oxides of iron, the other two being iron(II) oxide (FeO), which is rare, and iron(II,III) oxide (Fe3O4), which also occurs naturally as the mineral magnetite. As the mineral known as hematite, Fe2O3 is the main source of the iron for the steel industry. Fe2O3 is paramagnetic, reddish brown, and readily attacked by acids. Rust is often called iron(III) oxide, and to some extent, this label is useful, because rust shares several properties and has a similar composition. To a chemist, rust is considered an ill-defined material, described as hydrated ferric oxide.

It is my understanding the it is the iron that dissolves into the water it what feeds algae but I am not a chemist. You see iron is plant food as well.

GFO is supposed to be designed to leech a limited amount of soluble iron into the water; the soluble iron is what leads to problems... Plus a steel clamp is more than just iron...

All of that aside, when it corrodes, it will be a massive pain to remove should you ever need to; reason enough to replace it before it becomes a problem :)

The plastic clamps are good... An alternative a lot of folks use is a zip-tie pulled very tight at the point where you'd put a clamp; not as convenient or safe as the plastic clamps, but it can work in a pinch.
