Just finished Cycling.

My 20H just finished cycling last week and I bought some snails on Thursday and some Red Legged Hermit Crabs on Friday. I only put 5 crabs in the tank but when I got home I noticedthat there were 6 items in the bag. After I finished acclimation, one of those 6 itmes was a green mushroom. Is there any chance for this mushroom to survive?

I don't have an alk or ca test kit yet.
Another bonus or not... I noticed that one of the snails has a feather duster growing from his shell.

I second that! I've had mushrooms on LR that I bought from an LFS with damped towels and still made it home after 30mins.

Yeah, and if the mushroom doesn't make it, let me know and I trim a few flourescent greens ones off fer ya'.... :D

Thanks what a gracious offer. :D
It seems to have found a happy place and opens up nicely when the lights come on. This is the first coral i've ever owned. I am assuming I will need to feed it at some point right? I guess I better go research that.

Nope mushrooms are photosynthetic. Hold on now, soon you'll be overflowing. I remember when I finally got my tank cycled. I had 3 corals then 8 corals. . .I just brought home 10 more corals. .I probably don't have room in my 20g anymore, but I'm still cramming things in it.

I am trying not to do that... I know I could go overboard if I didn't practice some self control. I wanted to wait a bit and see if the snails and crabs would do some house cleaning and to see their demeanor after a water change. They are not working fast enough for me or I don't have enough of them. 5 snails 5 crabs and 1 green mushroom. There's lots of brown stringy algea.... Come on Guys get to work. :?

Next time some Xenia comes up for grabs I'll be all over that.

Trust me before you know it you will have more coral then you can handle. I started 6 months ago with a 5 gallon and have so far stuffed it FULL of everything I can get. I am just waiting to get my 20 up and running but in the mean time i had to start a 10gal frag tank just to hold everything I have.

One more question... Since my hitchhiker is loose, should I superglue it down to a peice of rubble or will it take hold when it gets ready?

If you can take the whole thing out of water you can super glue it on so it is firmer attached. Once you have quite a few they start dropping off into the sand.

It's only one head. It found a happy place but i can tell by the current that it's not firmly attached to anything.

Aww, it will attach itself sooner or later. I have some that dropped and ended up in the back where I can't get them. They grow in the sand too.

As long as it's not flopping and flying around the tank, I'd leave it alone. They're so slimy that superglue rarely works with them. If you're bound and determined to have it in one spot, you can put some bridal veil around it and lightly hold it down to a certain spot. Within a week, it should be firmly attached.

Just don't freak out if you see it 'melting'.. it looks like they shrivel up a little, and then start sliding down the rock, leaving a puddle of tissue behind. The puddle will grow into a new mushroom, and the top will reattach elsewhere. You also may notice new ones popping out from around the existing one.

PM me if you want some pulsing xenia- I'm always trimming frags off.

Thanks Scott and Jaguar for the info. I noticed it does shrivel up when the lights go out.
I shall leave it be and let it do it's thang.
