Joe's Juice catastrophe

So, I was going to treat the pest anemones w/ joe's juice today. In the midst of filling the syringe the phone rings, and it's for me...long story short others take over and end up knocking 1/2 the bottle of joe's juice into the tank.

The tank looked like it was snowing joe's juice.

We did an immediate water change of about 10%. I went to work and came home.

That was about 10 hours ago. Everything looks okay now. Corals all look normal and fish are normal. Even the RBTA came out and looks awesome tonight.

Should I do another immediate water change tomorrow? The prob is we are 20 miles or so from anywhere to get salt water (and we are pretty much down to our last 10 gallons) and gas is in a major shortage right now in North TX so I hate to spend the fuel if everyone thinks things will be fine.

Should I just wait it out until next weekend and then do another big water change or panic and drive to get water to do it ASAP?

Thanks for your feedback! I know it's such a stupid thing to have happpen...I just need advice as to how to fix it.

It depends... Was this in your 140 gallon, or your 24 gallon? Either one I would completely panic, but especially if this was in the 140, 1/2 bottle of Joe's Juice shouldn't be too lethal I wouldn't think... I've accidentally put FAR more very concentrated Kalkwasser into my 150 on more than one occassion in the past... (And I believe the common consensus that the active ingredgient in Joe's Juice is kalk. Having never used it, someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...)

Bottom line, and this is of course just my opinion, please don't hunt me down if you follow my advice and everything goes berserk, but if the fish don't appear to be stressing, and the corals/inverts appears to be fine, I wouldn't worry that much...

One other thing to test, if possible you might wanna test the PH of the water and make sure it's not out of whack, but once again in my opinion half a bottle of Joe's Juice just isn't enough to knock 140 gallons of water outta whack chemically...

Oh yeah, and long term advice - Get an RO/DI filter so you can make your own saltwater and not be dependent on getting it from someone else when you really need it... :)

In the future, always premix any chemicals away from your tank. This includes test kits, Joe's Juice, buffers, salt and more.

I even recommend you don't keep containers of food near your tank because it isn't hard to knock a jar of flake food into your tank. Try to only take to your tank what you will use, and keep everything else on the kitchen counter where it should do no harm.

Regarding what happened, odds are the chemical precipitated out into the water, and as long as all your livestock looks okay, I wouldn't worry as much. Let us know what your alkalinity, pH and calcium levels are if you can.

Joes Juice is very simular to kalk so as Marc said you probably had a pretty big precipitration event but no major harm.

Check your pH and make sure it is not wacky. Also check your alk and calcium as I would suspectthey are low due to the precipitation. bring everything back up slowly and then do water change when convienent. It should be fine.
