I will be going to Mexico in a few months. I was planning on gathering some empty shells. Is this a good idea and what do I need to do to reassure nothing harmful gets in my tank?

I'm no expert, but I'd do the same thing I would to prepare shells I get from the hobby stores before I dump them in my tank - boil the shells for 20 minutes in RO/DI water.

check with local authorities.i gathered shell from bahamas only to have them taken as contaband at the airport

if its dry shells it will be easy. Just pack them in your stuff. if your talking about hermits and snails you might have trouble with laws about importing live stock.

Ive alwasy been able to take shells out of mexico, but if you get nervous, you can always sneek them out prison style :shock:

ive had shells in my bag when it was searched before. hit that stupid red light green light thing and they got to see all my goods. didnt think twice when they saw the shells, or the booz , so i bet you will be just fine bringing them back.
