Is too much flow bad? If so how much is too much?

If 500-600 GPH is recommended for a 100 gal tank, does that take into account the sump volume as well?

AquaC (among others) recommends a EV240 for a 100 gal tank, to which they recommend using a mag 12. In order for this set up to work I'd need a dual overflow and another mag 12. Is that going to be too much flow?

Thermal,

I would think that would be a nice fit depending on the size of the plumbing that you run from the Mag 12 doing the recirculation duty. Presumably the second Mag 12 is just driving the EV 240 and would not be involved in the flow through the tank,...only the sump in some manner. I currently run a Dual overflow 140g with a Mag 12 on a Skimmer and Mag 18 with 3 way split for the returns that are all using 1" pipe. I use the 3rd leg of the Mag 18 to push carbon, UV, and phosban reactors. I would still like to get a little more circulation through the tank, but am not willing to plumb up to the 1 1/2" size needed to do it. Conside your lenght of piping and size and use the reef central pump/flow calculator to help if in doubt. The dual overflows should be able to handle about 1200g/h by themselves.

You'll also appreciate the extra flow if you ever have a cyano problem too. And unless you are planning on raising seahorses or something that needs really low flow, more is always better... 8)

The amount of flow through the sump area if using one, is a different total than the total water movement in and around the tank itself.
While I do consider the flow through the sump when considering overall water movement, I do not think it a good idea to have too much flow through the sump area. It can create problems with micro bubbles getting back into the display.
