[So while the fish have been in hypo overcoming ick (they're still in QT, but now in the sixth week we're raising the SG back to normal), we've been modifying our setup somewhat. We've ditched the bio-balls in the wet/dry, and fully divided the sump area between the bio-ball section and the return area by siliconing in a fitted piece of plexiglass. Still ensuring that there's no leakage though.
Anyway, for the refugium we've taken down our 42g hex tank that was a fw setup, added LS and LR, and set it up next to the 110g main tank. The idea is to basically have both tanks feeding into the first section of the sump (where the skimmer will be), and then the skimmer compartment will overflow into the return section, where two return pumps will take water back to the two tanks. So essentially it is two tanks sharing a common sump, which means it is one common water system between the two. Is the 42g technically a refugium in this setup? We've got chaeto in the 42g in addition to the LR/LS, and long term after the 42g is more established the plan is to add a couple of seahorses and a mandarin. That'll be about the only bio load other than some snails.
Assuming the divided sections of the sump aren't leaking, we plan on connecting the two tanks this weekend. Should be a pretty cool setup!
