is purple algae good

I got a lot of purple algae on my rock and I dont think it serves the same purpose as the fodder on the back of my tank(for my yellow tang)....but does it? I think it killed my pylops.- By the way I had a great time at my first meeting and look forward to many more.-

Is this a slimy reddish (deep red, almost purple) algae or the plating kind that encases the rock (a more "bright" purple)?

If its the darker red stuff, its actually cyano bacteria and its a nutrient and/or circulation issue.

If its the lighter/brighter stuff that solely sticks to the rocks (there are threads on here that talk about it covering polyps and what-not) then its typically Corraline algae and thats a good thing if you like the look.

I dont think I met you at the meeting, but I had to leave early...I was getting a little sick feeling so I had to leave early (before the raffle  )

Ive got 2 power heads in a 55 gallon tank but i had the same suspicion. I tried moving them around but i always end up leaving a spot out. I been cleaning the purple off the rock during water changes after my pylops started looking sick. I will try to post a pic after work thanks

You can also try facing the powerheads towards one another on opposite ends of the tank, it'll create some randomized flow from their "collision" (I dont even pretend to know techincal terms) and it could help out some, not sure though.

This is like one newbie throwing another a life preserver from an innertube.

Do you use Maxi-Jets by chance? If so, I have a mod kit that turns cranks up the flow big time. Its also kinda like the koralia in that its a more dispersed flow, not a stream in one area.

It cost me like $17 bucks and it was in the water for like 10 minutes (too much flow with two of them for my 45) and I would let it go for $15. Still have the box, directions, etc.

Just let me know if you'd like it if the rearrangement of powerheads isn't working. You can also look at some hydor flow deflectors, they will randomize the flow too so its not one blast going in one direction the whole time.
