is my recirculation pump too much?

i am currently setting up an Oceanic 58g Ultimate. i have a 1/4" Durso Standpipe draining through a one inch bulkhead fitting to my sump. i have a 1" bulkhead fitting in my sump connected to a Quiet One 6000 (running external) pumping through 3/4" pvc back into the tank. i used the calculator at reef central to calculate the amount of flow considering my pump and my plumbing, and it estimates 570 gph.

is that too much for the 58g tank? not enough?

i'm also using an AquaC EV90 skimmer. i have a mag5 (with a mag7 impeller) to power that, but should I instead consider partitioning some of the flow from the Quiet One 6000 to run the skimmer, thus lowering the flow to the main tank?

I'd split it and run both if you could. You only need about 3-5 times the tank volume for flow through the sump. Too much more and you risk microbubbles, noise, etc...

I can't say that it is too much or not enough. I guess that would depend on how much gurgling noise, if any, you are getting through your durso. That being said, I am using a Quiet One 3000 on my 125 gallon reef. When I plug the numbers into the calculator on RC I get about 550gph to the DT, but I am using 1 inch plumbing on the return.

I had a Quiet One 6000 as the return on my 150 gallon tank... IMHO a QO 6000 is overkill for a tank your size, I'd look more in the Quiet One 3000 range... Just my opinion...

thanks for your input. it looks like i am in a good position here. i'll plumb it with the mindset of using the quiet one 6000 for both the recirculation and the skimmer. that'll save me the heat from the mag5-7. look for a mag5-7 on the sale forum soon. :)

thanks again for the input. i guess i'll make up the rest of the water movement with powerheads in the the tank. thanks to dp1416 (donnie) for the octopus 3000 as a wavemaker.
