IS MY CLOWN PREGNANT?

Ok, can someone please tell me if Clowns look different if they are carrying eggs? For some reason while I was watching my clowns I noticed that my female looked really fat but just in the belly area the rest of the body is thin. The only thing is that I do not think they are old enough to spawn. I know some of you have mated clowns. Or do I just have an oddly fat clown?

Our tomato clown would look a bit larger right before she laid eggs, and her ovipositor would extend a bit.

Is it common for clowns to mate at a young age? I am not sure how old they are, they are not very big or anything. I estimate my female about 2" and my male about 1 1/2"

First of all, I believe we better check at what age we are at with these two clowns by comparing clown years to human years. If that female is under 17 and the male is over 17, then we have a serious problem.

That having been said, Scott pretty well hit the nail on the head. We have a pair of false percs that have been laying eggs for a number of months. Just before laying, they'll do the shimmy dance, the male starts cleaning a spot which is usually near their host anemone, the female's ovipositor will be extended, and the male usually drives the female to the chosen and cleaned site to do their thing. As usual, the male has to do most of the work.

Very funny, Ted!

Actually, we had a speaker a couple of years ago that stated you cannot tell how old clowns are, just because they are small.

They stay small until they move up the rings around the anemones, with the biggest, largest - and then female - fish is in the very heart of the anemone.

If that takes years, then you could have a very old, but small, fish.
