Is everyone that does it themselves male?

I just thought I'd ask. I tinker with wood/shelving, a little bit of electrical wiring (as long as it's not plugged in and has alot of electrical tape on it), and putting things with instructions together (maybe this doesn't count).

I've been scrolling over all the DIY projects and just noticed, like is DIY in DFW with aquariums mostly male dominated? Geesh, just wait till I muck up something all the guys are gonna chime in about how girlly I am.

Well I'm lurking, and hope to learn about PVC and plumbing. I'm really bad at plumbing. How bad is that? I don't have the slightest clue about it. I'm making my first PVC structure, but it doesn't have to hold water, so I think I'm safe.

That would make a nice demonstration for an upcoming meeting.

I'd say at least 80% of the club is male, so I'm not surprised that most of the DIY is also posts by the male folk.

You see quite a few more women at the meetings than what there used to be only a couple years ago. We're gaining numerically!

It's simply a numbers game. The hobby is largely made up of males and DIY in general is usually much more interesting to males so combine those 2 and is a small DIY female marine aquarium population.

Not to say it should stop you at all!

Plumbing and PVC are things that I'm pretty good with so feel free to ask away!

You also have a lot of famlies in this hobby, my wife loves the tank and cleans it and does everything with me. She helps or does the DIY with me but she has no desire to log on the board or post anything.

Same here. My husband and I do all the DIY stuff together but he is the one that usually takes the time to post it to the board. Plus he is the computer guru of the family so he gets the job of posting the pictures and such.

Ah, you know I didn't realize the club was mostly male actually. Sometimes I'm a little slow. As far as asking questions about plumbing, um I wouldn't know where to start. Put it this way the sink broke once and we needed a new end part for it. I walked in asking the guy in plumbing for the thingamabobbie that goes on the what'cha callit gizmo with the faucet. He goes  and then my other have burst out laughing and took over. He says he sent me in first just to hear me do that; he didn't think I was joking when I told him what was broken to begin with.

I just read really closely what everyone does with there sumps and try to follow so I might retain some of the knowledge. I like building stuff. It's cheaper and fun (normally).

But ya' know you're dealing with someone who REALLY knows their stuff when you give that description, and they hand you the right part anyway! 8)

I beat my husband into helping me with DIY stuff - or bribe salty_75 with rics and wine, who lives a street away.

In the past four months I've added a new sump/fuge and just finished building a new canopy that my cat can't jump on top of to my set-up. I do all of my own DIY research and planning, and then enlist the help of those with the tools and braun.

Not sure what I'll start next...

Jaguar,
For DIY's I tend to do most of them myself unless it requires help (like pulling an engine, then my wife's right there with me getting all Greasy.
The fact that you WANT to do these DIY projects say's alot for you, regardless of gender. I'll bet that if you ask most of the DIY guys how many of their PVC projects never leaked, you're totals would be ZERO=never leaked, Everyone else=leaked. it's part of the learning curve. My Wife also provided a CRUCIAL service for my DIY projects... She's got the phone in hand ready to dial 911
Just keep plugging away with it and sweettalk all the guys for every little hint or trick you can get for these. Our Club is a virtual cornucopia of DIY info. Before you know it.... we'll be asking YOU how to do things(but don't expect us to ask for directions)

 That's funny! Yeah there are certain times I ask Lee to cut things with the skillsaw. I just swear I'm going to cut my finger off.

Maybe plumbing is like bbqing. My friend says bbqing is genetically coded into the Y chromosome so all guys can naturally do it. I did my first bbq Sunday all by myself. First I had to buy stuff that took like 2 hours, then apparently I had to put the small portable grill together there went another hour. By the time it was all done 3 out of 4 burgers made it, the potatoes were a little burned, I cut myself building the thing, and I burned my finger trying to light the charcoal.

BBQ is hard.

Isn't it the females that usually end up figuring out and fixing whats wrong with the disposal said:
Umm you obviously haven't talked to my wife. She won't touch anything that involves building or repairing and especially if it involves anything powered. She's never used power anything. Not even a drill for driving screws!

Not that she's not sharp and couldn't figure it out, she just has no desire to mess with it!

As for the men thing I'll leave that alone except to say if either gender ever figures out the other then life would be no fun!

PVC is a snap. Think of it as Lego's with glue! The most difficult thing is finding the correct piece that you need.

Aint' that the truth. I have a big tub with an assortment of pvc parts. It never fails, when I'm looking for a certain part, it's not one I have. Not to worry though, they're building a Lowes just a few blocks away from my home. :D

Yeah Tom, there's no way I'd manage without both Lowe's and Home Depot in the immediate area.

I've gone in there too many times trying to explain I need the thingamaggie for the what'sacallit thermopal . .'thing'. Yeah that part it's this big
. I now just take in the broke part or the part that will be attached to whatever I'm looking for.

How ironic... I've been thinking the same thing all along, and was gonna comment, but kept thinking "No, I'm a moderator, I've gotta set a better example than that" and refrained... And who goes and makes the comment? The sweetest most innocent moderator/BOD member we've got!

Tee hee...I agree - been meaning to comment on the title but just couldn't bring myself to do it...

BTW...I was in the middle of trying to replumb a drip system to connect to a sprinkler riser instead of the hose...took one dig into my aquarium PVC pile and found what I needed! Sad, very sad...
