Iodine dosing

I am getting conflicting information regarding dosing Iodine.

according to this article http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-05/rhf/index.php in Reef Keeping Magazine dosing iodine is discouraged.

I spoke to someone yesterday that has been in the hobby for 20+ years in the retail business and recommended it for my tank.My softies are not looking as good as they did and my anenomes were hidding more often, also my shrimp does not shed as much as he used to, all of these things he said could be contributed to a lack of iodine. I've had really good advice from this individual in the past so I bought the eight dollar bottle. Another guy at Dallas North Aquarium said I was lacking Iodine as well when i told him my red Xenias were elongated more then when i first got them.

I've given the tank two doses of Iodine, and I notice a big difference. My xenias are happier, my BTA perked up and my frogspawn went wild! He is about 1/3 larger then normal.

Anyways, what do you guys make of this?

Is it worth dosing?

Is it dangerous?

I'm using Kent Marine Iodine, I'm dosing according to the store clerk two cap fulls every other day for a week then go to two cap fulls every week.

I've used Kent's Lugols solution for many years. I dose a few drops every week. Seems to keep the xenia happy.

i added iodine for several years and saw a massive increase in soft corals. leathers polyps etc... but as to how much.. Extreme caution is the best... just a little to much can burn them up... it also matters what size tank you are adding to.. i was added couple of drops twice a week to a 120.. but then i have been out of it for past 6 yrs.. (but not for much Longer)

I have seen in the past that softies in general love it. Any even though it is not scientific, enough people report it that I think there has to be something to it.

Having said that, it is very easy to overdose for sure and there has been some SPS issues with it. Best thing is like anything else, buy a test kit and make sure the levels are not to high and you should be fine. Salifert has an Iodine test kit that works well, RHF says it only captures some forms though. So I would say extreme caution. If you dose only do a very very small amount like a drop every 50G a week or something like that!
