So my 24g has been running for almost 3 weeks now and has cycled through a lot and much has started to grow.

Inverts:

(3) dwarf crabs
(3) Nassarius Snails
(1) Blue leg crab
(2) astria snails

All my inverts seem to be working very hard at keeping algae under control, except it seems that the dwarf crabs do not cover enough of the rock in there. Also it seems that the hair algae is on the verge of becoming a problem, but unsure of that as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions to making sure my algae stays under control?

I never even considered the emerald crabs, but I will pick them up since you said that. My blue leg is working hard, but he is by himself pretty much and seems to be having issues keeping up. I do have one turbo in there I forgot to mention, but he is cleaning the already clean glass lol.

You need a larger clean up crew. More crabs and some turbo's. When I had my BC29 running my crew was way larger than that. You need at least 10 more hermits and 2 to 3 turbos. That is what I did and never had any problems. You maybe running your lights for too long also.

I know I'm running my lights too long... problem is though that in my nano-cube 24g, the moonlights are hooked straight into the regular lights so i have no way of controlling the two seperately unless I'm missing something.

It is a JBJ. Thats what I figured. My 12g is an aquapod and I have all three lights on timers. If you have any insight into the JBJ, I'm almost positive I've missed it and I'd love to get the lights on a timer.

This came off of the JBJ site hope it helps. I never had a JBJ. Aquapod and Bio Cube yes.

Your Nano-Cube incorporates our Nite-Vu LED’s that simulate
nocturnal cycles with very dim blue light (nightlights) that casts
sparkling rays that shimmer for a more natural light cycle commonly
found in nature.
A. Press the switch located on the remote ballast to “OFF” position
and press the switch located on top of the canopy hood to
“ON” position to turn on the Nite-Vu LED lighting.
B. The Nite-Vu LED lighting is very dim not to disturb the night
cycles of fish but just bright enough to watch their nocturnal
behaviors. The Nite-Vu LED lighting is best seen when surrounding
light is turned off in the room.

Yeah, I've gotten that far. The problem is that they run the wiring for the LED's through the ballast and there is only one plug for all lighting that goes from the ballast to the wall. Crazy design, I know, but I'll try playing with it some more.

Have you tried to turn the switch on the ballast off then turn the switch on the hood to on? They may have a bypass of some kind built in to the ballast. If that does not work try a LFS that sells them. Also try nanoreef.com there is some good info on nano tanks on that site.

Yeah, you can turn off the ballast and turn on the LEDs, but in order to get the ballast on a timer, there is only one plug from the wall so that will shut off power to the entire ballast and the LEDs won't turn on or off.

Yeah, there is a way around it. Nanotuners has it to where you can mod the ballast for $60 to make the fans and moonlights seperate from the pc lighting. I'm not huge on modding :(, maybe in the future.

I posted on nanoreef.com it seems like everyone had to mod the hood or live with it. That is a bad design. I am not sure what JBJ was thinking on that one. If I hear anything I will let you know. You may want to try the timer and not worry about the moon lights. At least it will control the HA.

Here is a mod that looks easy and it is only $24. I pulled this off of the other site. I hope it helps.

Here is the moonlight fix on its own:

They're very helpful on the phone and I'm sure will tell you how the install is.
