My friend on his free time is going to design me a house..I want to go one story...I want a fish room that is going to have a inwall facing the living room or dining room...I am thinking maybe a huge laundry room as I want the room to still be functional but big enough to allow me to move around..Any ideas or suggestions that he needs to plan for..I

If you can just add to the list ....so next person put 4

Some ideas that come to mind

1. Wiring panel and extra outlets thinking of going x10 outlets.
2. Sink and also drain on the floor
3. Ventilation and maybe a sky light (?)

5. tile flooring
6. water proofing the walls
7. greenboard drywall
8. a/c (if not included in ventilation)

i like johnny's idea of solatubes.

9. ditch the sheetrock and go with hardiboard or durarock and FRP Panels (fiberglass wall panels)...this woudl almost eliminate any mold concerns and you never have to paint or waterproof the walls
10. I would not use tile, wood, or paint on the floor, consider stained concrete. if you need a design, simply stamp the concrete floor before you paint it with the design of your choice.
11. consider having a sliding light rack built into the structure
12. storage elevated about 6 inches above the groud.
13. no matter what wall the room is, have all walls insulated with foam insulation, this will greatly increase the temp stability of the room. Most houses do not insulate interior walls, only exterior.

Vent fan for sure, separate A/C unit from the home central system.
Floor drain, if possible
Make the room bigger than you need it. I wish mine was larger.
Outlets up high for lighting needs
Outlets down low for plugs around the sump
My fish room has 3 circuits, but two of them share with the living room and garage area.

14. create a small lip in the doorway and pitch the floor to the center drain, so that even if you had a massive leak, the water would have to go up to 2-3 inches deep before it could leave the fish room. Picture it as a huge walk in shower.. concrete backerboard the first couple of inches at least, and then tile or concrete over that and the floor.

all great ideas i am going to make a wish list for my friend to design this room.....I have no experience with sola tubes but i do have a skylight in my master bathroom and during the day it gets really warm in there...

thanks everyone for their input, if you think of anything else let me know...

Have space in the laundry room for two water storage tanks (RO/DI & Salt). Maybe even a pump and some plumbing to the main tank. Think ease of maintenance!

you may want to check out the RC thread on solatubes if you haven't already.
