Injured Shrimp

Well the other night I was making my shirmp feeding rounds before bed and I noticed that the peppermint shrimp in my 12g wouldn't let go of the stick I put a piece of clam on. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't just grab the food off and go like it always does. The next day I fed the fish and it came out trying to get pellets off the sand. This shirmp rarely comes out in the morning. But I noticed it was missing it's two pincher legs, the ones they use to scour the rocks and sand for food and put food into their mouths with. So I set up a small intank breeder for it and put it in there so I could make sure it got food. On closer inspection it's missing its right eye, a couple other legs, part or all of an antennae or two.

I can't figure out if it was a bad molt OR an ornery emerald crab OR fiesty gramma. And although I thought they were pretty quick, I did do some bubble algae cleaning the other day and one of the rocks fell over. It is eating. I put mysis and other food in there and it can put its mouth onto the food and eat it that way. Although I'm not sure about this molting process, I'm hoping that it'll get new body parts on the next molt and I hope it works that way. If so, it'll get moved in with my other peppermints or with my sun corals for a smorgasbord of leftovers.

Yeah, poor little guy. I had originally put him in with my cleaner shrimp but caught them chasing it for dinner. I scooped it up in my hand and it literally jumped in my hand to get away from the cleaner. So being a rescue I had a softer spot for him. :(

Sorry Deb. I have an Emerald Crab that lost a claw arm, and it fully gre back after 2 molts. I just noticed lastnight that it's missing the other one this time.... sigh...
