In-Tank Macros

I am not running a fuge for my nano, so I am wondering what some good in-tank macros are that will help keep some of the micros in check. Preferably some that are hardy, but controlable, not to invasive and won't just take over my tank.

Thanks...

Howard

Most display type Macros I can think of--Mermaid's Shaving Brush, Halimeda, etc., don't do much for nutrient uptake and use calcium. IMO this is a tricky situation because the macros we use in refugiums for nutrient uptake are utilized BECAUSE they grow so fast. Of course, they get out of control in a display so in your case they wouldn't work. Some people do stuff a bit of chaeto behind their rockwork or someplace in the tank where it is not visible. You could also get a HOB refugium and use caulerpa or chaeto there. Maybe Scott (Ashlar) or Brian (Serk) can chime in. My knowledge of macros is fairly limited and both those guys know a lot more than I do about macros. They are the two "experts" I can think of who might have a option for you.

cheato morphia is what most people use. Its hardy and it wont go sexual and wipe out your tank like caulerpa. Most people give it away when they trim back their tanks. I would have given you some had I known you needed some when you cam by my place the other day.

When I was sumples I used to just stick soem behind the rock where it was out of view but still recieved light.

There are some pretty red macroalgaes, halymenia, rhodymenia, etc. They're middle of the road when it comes to growth rate, too.

Thanks Scott, are they hard to find? Also, do they consume Calcium as Ben had mentioned above? How would you say they are in using nutrients?

Thanks
Howard

Those two don't consume calcium, and the grow at a decent pace- so not _great_ for nutrient export, but better than slow growers.
