In Over My Head 115 DAS

Want to sell 115 gal Reef DAS tank flat back hex. Set up by Dallas North on 3/06. Live sand, live rock. Has two anemones, yellow polyp, green mushroom. A pair of mated maroon clowns, another clown. 4 angel type 1 sand sifting fish, 2 green chromus(sp?) 2 fire clams that hide, some snails star and turbo, crabs. 3 JR (?forgot the name) power heads. I also have several chemicals, additives and food- some frozen and 5 five gallon jugs, and lots of tools. Everything scares me. I have spent a fortune, so I would like about $2,000. I am sure someone will let me know if it is way too high for a used tank. It could be a good deal for someone who was thinking of buying new. I think I will stick with fresh. I am just not ready for the hobby. It is very pretty. I do not have a digital camera. Anyone in the Coppell area want to help me take a picture to post? I heard they are hard to take.

Fear is taking over here. Can someone from that area go help, and calm her/him down?
debkar, all you need is books, some chemical tests and a chill pill.
The new marine aquarium.. The conscientious marine aquariast, are 2 good ones.

I went to the library and got a couple books when I started out... Sounds stupid but "aquariums for dummy's" was my first book. If you still need help send me a pm and I can come by

I have been reading lots of books. I have the one for Dummies, I like it. One issue I have is some sort of sediment that floats on top of the water. I have a DAS and not sure if I should have had something else. Water quality always checks out fine, sometimes the salinity is a little high if I need to top off. I had my garage door fix several weeks ago, the guy that fixed it has marine aquariums and thought the protein level might be too high, I tried to research it and did not come up with any ideas. Right now there is a loud hum that wasn’t there before. I thought that it might be a power head but can not seem to locate it I thought it might be against the rock just vibrating but if not I read where they can over heat. I do not ever have things die but now two of the mushroom pieces look like they might. Sure it looks great now but I sit and stare worrying at any moment it will crash… I am not sure how much live rock I have; I think it was 150 lbs.

Where are you located? I am in the east side of the world in Rockwall. If you are around here (dallas, plano, richardson...) I will be than happy to help out. As I am sure there are others that can help as well.

Debkar, I sent you a PM.. I'm in Coppell, and would be happy to talk to you about your tank and any concerns / problems you might have.

Debkar, Coppell is near Lewisville, Grapevine, Carrollton and DFW airport and there are many, many people around these areas that are really good in saltwater and very friendly/nice people. All you have to do is take one look at their tanks to see that they know what they are doing. I have met some of them and seen their tanks and they are absolutely beautiful.

Try not to feel to overwhelmed and think of it as the hardest part is behind you, the collection of all the needed pieces and the set up. The rest is such a pleasure and a great learning experience as long as you have the tank. We can never learn it all. :) Try not to give up.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and offers for help. I did send a PM to one person from the Coppell area to call me since they offered to help. I still may need help some others if he finds me hopeless!!! Part of me still would really like to have a nice tank with out fear.

You will! You will! You can't sell such a lovely tank, your doing so well already. It's a little overwhelming sometimes, but as someone already mentioned the hard part is over. You put it all together set it up and it's running.

I wish you the best of luck in your learning experience. This hobby is too rewarding. Just sit back and soak up the rays of information people are willing to share.

debkar, try cleaning your powerheads and pumps, one by one, until you find the one thats vibrating. Is the skimmer working and are you emptying it? Protien is food/waste either rotting in the water or in the form of fish poop causing the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate cycle. the garage door guy probably means you are feeding too much, not changing enough water &/or the skimmer isn't efficient enough. Have confidence, your fish are still alive after this long, so you are doing fine.

My neighbor and I both have 180 gallon tank. We live in Valley Ranch, east side of Macarthur. In short, we are closed to where you live, and are wiling to help you. It's really not rocket science.

I know they had fire and all but why isn't Dallas north helping you out more? I can assure you that there in home hasn't been affected. Thats what I've heard about them. Set you up and let you flounder.

I use distilled water to top off my tank and for my water changes for myself I can see a huge difference in water clarity and less gunk in my skimmer cup.

Everyone at Dallas North has been very nice and helpful. The service is $125 every two weeks. I had them come for the first two months just really can not afford to keep having the service, plus take off work to be there to learn while they did the service..teach a man to fish ect....I thought I would have been more comfortable by now is all. It really is quite over whelming... Deb
