I have been caring for my tank for sometime now by myself and this one has me at my ends. I have this crap growing all over my rock and I can't get it to stop. The only thing different I have done since this has started was I stupidly added a engineer goby to the group. I have test all my levels are fine actually perfect. So now I'm sick of this crap being everywhere i look. It kind of comes off when I dust with a toothbrush but its not long before its back. I have a sock filter running on it and no luck. I need help guys and gals I'm about to say forget it all. And throw in the towel. I need a lot of help maybe someone to come look at it and give me ideas please my water always looks dusty.

Also all my beginner corals are tanking fast like the gsp and xenia but the more picky ones and harder to keep are doing great ???

Run a filter sock on you're return line. Keep it clean and run carbon.

My tank has been up 6 1/2 years and I have some crazy stuff on my rocks when I take a power head to them.

Ok ill try that too but the overhead doesn't make it let go its stuck on it I have to brunch it off even noticed it in the sump too

Go purchase about 5 large mexican turbos. See if they make a dent in it. If you see it starting to go away it's some type of hair algae.

Have you tested your phosphates?

Your phosphates are too high... Are you running Phosban or GFO or similar? U need to get down to around 0.03

How big is the tank and what power heads you running? I use to get that stuff in my old tank I didn't have enough flow

+1 flow might be the issue.

Ok I can get the phosphates down no problem and I will asap I have tons of flow some say to much never had a problem before I'm running a skimmer its a beast and yes to filter socks

im doing a big water change right now and breaking the rock down to catch the goby that part is done and he has met his faith. I feel bad about that one honestly and as for the rock bigk and my husband and I are taking one by one and scrubbing it clean then redoing the tank from scratch

I am going to step it up on my water changes because I believe that is part of the problem and then that monster goby was the icing on the cake in the wrost way possible

How old and deep is your sandbed? Have you ever siphoned your sandbed? Sounds like the goby released a ton of phosphates or whatever from your sand. I recommend removing that fish, and running gfo (dont overdo it) and doing a few 20% water changes in a row spaced 1-2 days until your phosphates are down and corals look healthy. Remember corals don't like huge changes so taking drastic measures could cause more issues. Gobies are good for helping to maintain a sandbed but can wreak havoc if you haven't siphoned/maintained in the past.

I'm guessing this is the very fine sugar sand which stirs up easily. Unfortunately, unless you want to remove it all from the tank, you might have to deal with it until the gobies sift through it and the light stuff floats away, while the heavy stuff settles. However, the idea of adding a couple of power heads to blow off the rock, but not stir the sand, would also help.

Like someone mentioned earlier, I would also add a clean-up crew with snails and hermits, to move over the rock and knock the sand off. An algae blenny can help, and the more critters you have, I think the better off you'll be.

I think my hermits have reproduced in my tank so I'll give you a few of my big ones. Maybe they'll be able to do something before the evil carpet gets them! Let me know. Also need to bring you your orange zoa frag. :)
