Im moving out of state

Ill be moving out of state in a month or so. the question is, can I take my 75g Reef ??? The drive is about 22 to 24 hours. California  so what would I have to do ??? I have a hippo tang, sailfin tang, gsm clownfish, false perc clown, 3 damsels, and soft corals.

Do you plan to drive straight through? theoretically with everything packed in bags with plenty of water and in a temperature controlled environment, the corals and fish should make the trip. They likely are in bags that long coming from the Far East to the wholesaler. Problems arise if you cant keep them in the car as temperatures through West Texas, New Mex, Arizona and the California dessert will be pretty intense. Stopping to rest, site seeing, visits etc probably have to be minimized.

You might think about all of that and decide, I am going to sell it all here and start over in Cali. Remember the variety available and the price due to proximity to all the wholesalers may mean you can upgrade without much of a hit on your wallet.

FWIW

I agree with Gary , with the heat and packing and worring all the way there I would just start over. Keep all the equipment or the neccesary and start over . Prices in Cali and selection should beat out Tx .

or you can leave them with a friend and have them ship them to you when you get your tank setup

i stopped by vividaquariums.com last time i was in canoga park...prices are comparable especially to rift to reef or neptunes cove...but selection was awesome at vivid aquariums.

Agree it is to much trouble to risk. There all lots of losses people have when moving tanks. Sell the livestock and rock and start fresh with the equipment. If your going to setup pretty quick you can even keep the rock but it's a pain moving a tank in a big way. I moved a 20G 14 hours and all went well but I'll never do it again!!

Ill be driving straight thru. what about if I put everything in bags and into a cooler with me in the cab. will the help the heat ??? Ill be having the A/c on.

The problem is not the driving but also the fact you have to reset which is also a several hour job and then it's likely you will have at least some losses. If you are dead set on it then ya. Do as much as you can in coolers and I would even have ice in case, but many times in the car with the air blasting they might get to cold so you need to watch that also.

Monitor water temp everytime you stop. Bag all your fish seperately with plenty of water and do the same for as many corals as you can and your losses should be minimal.

Good luck.

there is a good article in this newsletter about moving. It's discussing mostly local but same things would apply.

http://www.melevsreef.com/moving_a_tank.html

and a great one from Marine Depot on there educational articles from Paletta but I can't seem to get there right now. Sight it to slow or down.

I tried it when I moved to Texas. Very stressful to me and the livestock. Losses were high. Probably ammonia/waste levels got out of control in the bags. I even had bubblers in the live rock Rubbermaid run off the lighter with an AC converter. Would never do it again. Good luck.

If you bag them up. find a fish store that will let you use their Oxygen. I think you could pull it off. Plenty of business and distributors do it.

good luck to you

Have fun in cali

agree with everyone here. Moving is not an easy task, especially fish and corals. Sell them and start over in cali. Keep the dry goods and tanks. Let go those fishies and corals. I remember one of the members moved to Texas from California with his 400gallons tank.??? I think, his tank crashed and corals and fishies died, not all of them died, but he suffered some losses U might reconsider it. May be if he read your thread , he might give you some advice. Have fun in Cali.

As mentioned, you could ship all of your things - have someone here keep them for you, whether a store or someone who knows how to ship live critters.

I've often made the trip from here to Riverside, CA, and the heat is just awful - and the smog once you hit CA.

The shipping cost would be well worth it, if you really want to keep everything.

Otherwise, ship the tank, leave the rest here. Just my .02c
