I'm done with ecotech marine....

Well I'm done with Ecotech marine...

I have now had 3 mp10's go out on me in the course of 4 years. I just talked to one of the mangers there and told me that I should expect the motor of the mp10 to only last 2-3 years...that is 'normal.'

For the price of these units I would expect them to last much longer then that with proper maintenance.

What really disappointed me was I called eco-tech with some issues I was having on 2 of my mp10's and they said even though they were out of warranty to send them and they would try there best to take care of me...either with a repair or a discount on a replacement if needed.

Well they ended up saying they couldn't do anything and I needed to buy a new wetside, and 2 new dry sides. They wanted to charge me full retail price for the replacement parts. I said no thanks.

I do not want to buy new units in another 2-3 years.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to go with instead of the ecotech products? I wanted to like them, but now having had 3 units go bad on me, and reading numerous stories online of other people having problems with the dry side as well, I don't feel ok investing more money in their products. They just don't seem reliable over time.

What other products have you had good luck with?

I feel your pain I had 4 x mp40's that were constanlty sent to ecotech for repair eventually i got fed up and was able to piece together from 4 pumps one good pump . I switched to tunzes but still keep one vortech as their battery backup is better than tunzes battery backup in my opinion it is more user friendly

Did you see the group buy post for the Jebao knockoff pump? Might be an option and even if they do crap out after a while they won't break the bank.

I've had 3 MP40's for about 5 years with no problems at all. I have a Tunze sitting in a box somewhere dead. As with any mechanical motor, everyone will have varying degrees of success.

I have never had any problems with my mp 10's. I have friends who use tunze and have them break all the time. I also hear most people complain about the noise from the ecotech pumps and mine run silent. Maybe it was just a case of bad luck, I agree they are overpriced for the larger models though.

What exactly is happening with your MP10s? Are they getting wet? Are they grinding? Does it sound like metal rubbing? Is it falling off the tank? Are you buying new pumps, or used ones from others? Silveradobobby can replace the bearings for you, if you bring the pumps to him. I would think a pump that lasts two to three years being acceptable, running 24 hours a day. That 8760 hours a year. Two years, 17k hours in use. Three years, 26,280 hours... I've had my Mp10 running for at least four years, and I have replaced the wetside in that time.

If you bought new might check with your CC I know Amex extends manufactured warrant t's by a year. Might see if vortechs are covered

I've only had my Mp10 for a few months but I believe it should last at least 5 years or longer for the $$$. I have Rio 1100 &1400s that have been running for well over 5 years 24 hrs a day, my Koralia wavemaker is still running strong after 6 years. After all the hype I'll be waiting a few months/years to see how the Jebo's run.

I have 4 mp40s and 2 mp10s, the only problems i have had was with one of the original mp40s that was from the first batch ever and another newer mp40 that a snail got in to the blade area while it was turned off. They were quick to repair them both times and gave me a free prop for the second one under warranty even fully knowing what happened. I clean mine regularly and they have worked pretty much flawlessly. I also have two tunzes that have worked fine.

Some work well some don't.. their quality is uneven at best. They are awesome when you get a good one. Ive got through 4 or 5 myself since release, all upgrades and swap outs. I got rid of all but one and went with tunze. I may give em another go at some point because I love the MP60... but we will see if they are worthy.

I perfer the ecotechs as I have no stray current from them in the tank and no chance of them shorting out and killing anything. They can be hard to fine tune but it's worth it in the end. I am upgrading from MP10's to MP40's for my new tank and won't switch back to anything else.

Just to put that into perspective a Cummins motor is due for a rebuild at 6000 hours per the manufacturer, at 10,000 hours without a rebuild majr things start breaking. If you car was going 30 mph for the equivalent time these run at 3 years your car would have 788,400 miles on it. Not sure i have ever seen a car with that much.

I have sent mine back more then 6 times. They have alway taken care of me. With that said, I have never had to send my 4 tunze in except to replace small stuff. That was to upgrade old parts, not because it stopped working.
I just got back my 2 pumps back from ECOTECH last month. I have not fired them up in my new tanks. I'm sure it will work fine for a while. I will not hold my breath. Mine has never work flawlessly for more then 1 year. I only use them for the backup battery.

I'm a Tunze fan, too!

My lone Vortec MP40 wen through 3 wet side replacements over 2 years. 1st replacment was free from Vortec, but I had to pay for the next 2. After the last failure, I bought 2 Tunze streams and they have been running just fine for almost 3 years now. My original Tunze wave maker has been running for over 5 years using original parts, no issues so far. FWIW, I don't hear as many mechanical failures on Tunze as I hear about Vortec.

I sure don't want to sink another ~500 to try another Vortec out!
