I was thinking of buying some of these Ilyanassa obsoleta snails on Ebay. Seems like they have some pretty good prices, but I dont want to be adding any kind of unwanted parasites or pollutants since most of these seem to be wild caught.

Seems almost too good to be true. Anyone with experience good or bad?

yes, they are coldwater. I bought a bunch and most have died. They lay eggs all over your glass too. I wouldn't get them again.

I have a different opinion on these snails. I too saw the eBay auction and was interested and so asked around. I received much the same information you are receiving here with an addtional scare of someone telling me that they were predatory snails and would attack all of the other snails in my tank. Well I ended up getting in touch with a biologist who uses these snails for research and found out most of what you here is not true. Yes they do live and can be found off the east coast of the US so they can live in cold water, but they live in the shallow mud flats and so when summer rolls along they live in quite warm waters. They are also voracious eaters so in order to keep them alive they have to be fed. I went ahead and ordered 100 and got about 130. I put the bulk in my main tank, some in the sump/fuge, some in my quarantine tank and 15 in a curing tank that was in my garage. Well so far most are alive. I did not loose anymore than I see with any other type of snail. This includes the ones in the garage thank that was exposed to the summer Texas heat all summer in the garage. I put in 15 snails and 12 are still alive. I also left them in my quarantine tank through 2 - 3 month hypo salinity treatments and they are still alive and kicking. Now this is just my experience but I feel that they were a good purchase.

I recently purchase several hundred of these for myself and others and have been very pleased. It looked like I got shipped about 20% overage and I have lost far fewer than that so I am way ahead. I have not seen them eating other snails but I have seen the hermits go after them. They definately have been eating. The neat thing when they were released is that they took off in different directions. Some when up the glass, some went across the sand and others starting going under the sand and were fully buried within several minutes.

can these snails be pitched into the sump side of a wet/dry system? there isnt a light in my cabinet or anything.....a couple of us ordered some off of ebay and i wondered if i could put them in the wet/dry and move some over to the display now and then as they get high jacked by crabs or whatever.
