ID Yellowish Brown algea please

What is and how do I get rid of it? I just noticed it within the past hour.
Just switch to two part mag and also used API's Algaefix Sunday and today. Could that have caused a reaction?

So far the only thing I found for that API's Algaefix kills is cheato after a weeks use. Had no effect on my diatoms / brown algae or the cyano in my fowlr tank . I am adding it to my snake oil list.

I'm not supriced to hear that. I've almost divorced myself from all additives except this one. But this yellow stuff just poped up for the first time in my tank.

Weird, I've had great luck with Algaefix the 2 times I've used it. I do know though, that some products work better or worse for different folks (different tank chemistry, birth signs, something). I tried Kick-Ich once and there was 0 effect (with raised temps, and higher doses) and I do know people who swear by it (that I trust). Anyway, just dishing a little of the other side of the coin.

this is bryopsis.

Yours looks like brown diatoms.

Kick Ich is high on the snake oil list.

ahh ok thks I wasn't sure. This is nasty looking yellowish brown and slimy. I’ve always had a little cases of diatoms brown dusting in small areas of the sand but not as dense as it is now.

Cyno can be greenish/brown too. But diatoms is always my first guess when brown.

rckrzy1: Yeah, Kick-Ich is one of the highest on that list. But I do know 2 fellow reefers that I've known for years that have used it with good success. I know many more that have had no luck. Maybe it's the position of your tongue when you add salt to the tank *shrug*.

I can comment on API Algaefix. It is the only way I rid my tank of dinoflagellates. It did not kill my chaeto. Don't mean to change the subject though.

How many applications? I've done two so far.

Henry,

I have dosed Algaefix 7 times per the directions so far. It did kill my dinoflagellate problem, but hasn't put a dent in my green hair. So far the Chaeto is still alive, though not growing. I do have a little brown wafer algae that appears to have started a decline.

thx for the info Bryan

What kind of foods do you use again Hank?? Its not diatoms or dino's and definitely isn't bryopsis. said:
I’m going to cut back on the Reef Nutrition Roti-Feast and see what happens.

Well I stopped using the Reef Nutrition and all has cleared up.

I did perform several small water changes just to vac the algae out of the sand bed. I may start using it again until I get rid of what I have. However, I will use it very sparingly literally just a couple of drops instead of a couple of squirts or three (yep I probably used too much). This stuff has too much crude in the suspension and overloaded the nutrients in my system, however I never registered any nitrates.

Keep an eye on it... and see if it comes back or not.

Funny as my "diatom" or whatever brown algae problem started after I was feeding reef nutrition rotifeast and arctic pods.
