Ich

Hello DFW MAS members. My name is Grant and I'm new to the hobby as well as being a new DFWMAS premium member. I purchased a 62 gallon Tideline AIO tank from Dallas North Aquarium back in early May. Since then I have followed all the steps, instructions etc given to me by them when adding fish and coral. I added a purple tang and blue/regal tang about 3 weeks ago and about 2 weeks ago is when I noticed the ich outbreak. Since then I added a UV Sterilizer and they turned my temp up to about 80 to no avail. I'm now using Kick Ich Pro per their suggestion but it doesn't seem to be doing much so far however it is the only reef safe medication they could offer. I have about $1,000 worth of fish in the tank already (7 fish total) and over $1,500 worth of coral so I'm hoping something can be done. I don't have a quarantine tank at my house so that isn't an option currently. Any and all suggestions would be much welcomed. My salinity is also a little low (on purpose) at 1.021 as I was told that could help with the ich to some degree.

Welcome to DFWMAS try soaking they nori in garlic extract they are stressed out from being placed in a new environment

I’m sorry to hear that. Are the fish eating? To Drex’s point you’re going to want to minimize stress. Try keep things stable and if they are eating and can stay healthy they might be able to fight it off. The UV will help if they pass thru it in the free floating stage. I believe raising the temp helps speed up the life cycle and lowering the salinity makes to harder on the Ich, so not bad thoughts there. Just be mindful that the other things in your tank don’t like change. If the fish are eating and you’re not already try to soak the food with some vitamins as well to help boost their immune system.

The fish are eating both nori, pellets (with garlic) and about once a week I give them mysis shrimp. The problem with the UV Sterilizer is I'm not allowed to use/run it at the same time as using this Kick Ich. So my understanding is that I have to wait until I'm done dosing with the Kick Ich until I turn the UV back on.

I've never heard of a reef safe ich treatment that actually works. The absolute best thing to do in this situation is to get a qt going before the disease spreads and gets worse. Iirc Every 7 days the ich will fall of the fish and reproduce in the sand bed. Then another few days it comes back in more numbers and repeats the process untill the fish just succumbs to the disease. Taking all your fish out of the Display for 30-70 days will kill off the cycle and treat your QT accordingly.

This is the only way to get rid of the ich cycle. It sounds like a lot of work but it isnt too bad. I have a 40g on hand you can borrow for a QT if needed, just message me.

Hi thanks so much for the offer! I reached out to DNA where I got all my fish/coral from and will see what they say about being able to help me out. My flame angel and blue tang are starting to look pretty rough. If I were to borrow your 40g for a QT tank how long would I need to have it setup before trying to transfer the fish? I'm guessing I would/could do it right away and just use my "Ich water" because I will be treating the QT tank with copper or something along those lines anyways.

You can transfer them in right away. I would only fill 2/3 of the way to make copper dosing amounts lower and you will have a cycle with the fish in the QT so periodic small waterchanges are essential to remove nitrates. Keep your copper levels the same by pre dosing the new water. Iirc 70 days is the normal QT time to make sure all ich is gone in the main display.
