I think i have a zo! - What do i do!

[I was looking closely at one of the live rock I got in and saw what appears to be a minature zoanthid coral. Is there anything special I should do to help ensure it's survival? The tank is still in the middle of it's cycling although I have been doing water changes to minimize the ammonia & nitrite.

I have 4 x 65W PC lights with 2- 10k lamps & 2- Actinic lamps. However the Zo is in a shadow of another rock. Do I need to feed it? Move it to more light?

Thanks for any help!]

[This could be a simple polyp, in which case, it will either survive - or not. A lot of live rock comes with these attached.

Best of luck, and hope it survives!]

[How long have you been cycling. I've been up a month, although my live rock was really, really well cured when I added it, so I essentially had no detectable ammonia spike at all.

Anyway, I have a bunch of zoo's (button polyps) popping up now. They have grown in just two weeks like you wouldn't believe and I see a new one every other day or so.

Hope you have good luck too.]

[Moe,
I put the live rock in last Friday and have done one major (50%) water change when the nitrites got off the charts. Other than the 1st several days the ammonia has been low although nitrites have been rising (as to be expected).
It has been three years since I had a SW tank and seeing the zoo excites me (the reason we like this hobby right?). I hope to have a great zoo colony as well. thanks]

[It has been a long time since I've cycled a tank, but I believe nitrites are only up and down for about 2 days. By doing a water change, you will extend the cycling process. So keep testing your water to see where the numbers are.

Zoanthids need direct lighting. So if it is in a shadow, you might rearrange your rock so that it can get some light. You don't necessarily need to move the rock with the zoanthid, but let it get some direct lighting. I've not had any do well that were in a shaded area.]

[Just a word of warning. When I started my thank 2 and a half years ago I remember telling my LFS a similar story about my new polyps. Turns out it was a Aptashia out break Are the skirts on your new polyps uniform (the same length) or different lengths? Are they translucent or solid in color?

Welcome and Good Luck, on the strange new trip your on.]

[Ron,
thanks for the heads up. It definately does not look Aptasia (I looked for a picture on the net). The skirts do appear to be uniform so I will consider myself lucky.
Thanks]
