[Guys I am new to the hobby. I just got my last piece of equipment which is my RO/DI unit. I do not have a water source by my tank which is in the formal living area so I have to install it across the hall in my guest bathroom and run it through the atic down into my sump. Wanted to know is there anyone with experience doing this type of thing. I have all of the equipment and the shut-off valve etc. MAybe the guest bathroom isn't the best place and perhaps I may have a different alternative but that is where you come in. Please help..]

[Warren,
I performed a similar installation with the unit (as well as a pressure tank) mounted under my wetbar but with an additional line that runs through the attic to my tank. I wouldn't recommend directly plumbing it to the tank without some form of redundancy control to ensure that you cannot overflow the tank if a float switch gets stuck. Ive seen too many posts about a failing float switch and a SW tank turned FW while killing all livestock and flooding the room. I like the idea of a top off tank that holds a few days worth of evaporation. This tank can be connected to your system with a float switch and if the switch fails you can only fill the tank with a specified amount of RO water. Your RO unit can still be plumbed to a valve on the top off tank so that it is easy for you to just open the valve every few days and fill up yout top off tank.
If you do run plumbing in the attic just make sure it is insulated so that the water will not freeze during the winter.

[Andy I think I am following what you have written but I am trying to get a visual. If I am not to plumb my RO directly into my sump basically what you are saying is I should have my RO water run into a top off container and the sump draws water from the top off container? ]

[You are understanding Andy right. Having two shutoff are better than one. By manually filling the top off jug (3 or 5 gallon container) using a ball valve you eliminate the possiblity of an overflow. One other thing you might consider. If you are going to mix your own salt then you will need to find a place for a larger container and a cut off for it. You could set up the ro unit in the garage and have a large water container there and run the water line to the top off jug under your tank. That way you can have water in both places.]
