I hate when a fish dies

Especially a new fish. I bought three yesterday and two are just fine. The third was fine yesterday but dead this morning. I know my parameters are good because I just did a 30% water change last week trying to get rid of cyano.

Nitrate = 12. To me that should be fine for fish.
Salinity= 1.022
Temp= 78F

Coral Beauty. It happened to look a lot like a Potter's Angel because of its coloring. I like to think it would have been a great fish.

Now I lost a very nice blue reef chromis.

Two days ago I also lost a really nice firefish that jumped not only out of the canopy but an additional 3 feet from the aquarium and under a chair.

Is the moon in retrograde?

Did you check for ammonia and nitrite after you added the new LR, a cycle could have kicked off.

Cheers,

Today I noticed that my Royal Gramma and my Neon Goby did not come out for feeding. After looking pretty thoroughly I decided to take all the rock out and check. Neons will wedge into holes so I very carefully took each rock out, swirled it in a bucket, pulled the rock out and looked and then plunged the rock back in to dislodge anything that was in the rock. I did this three times.

Both have vanished without a trace.

I have no worms, no crabs, no hitchhikers of any kind. :sad:

Sorry to hear about your loss. Did you check around the tank to see if maybe they jumped out... I found a fish stuck to my wall behind my tank once....

Have you ever done a "flashlight patrol" at night? Ever tried placing an invert trap in the water? (i.e. a tall glass with some bait at the bottom, leaned up against the rocks).

I know you said that you have no hitchhikers, but it really sounds like you have a fish eater in there somewhere. Maybe a gorilla crab or a big worm that hides inside of the rock where you can't get to them.

Good luck to you in any event, I sincerely hope you find what's wrong in your tank and stop losing fish.

I have done flashlight patrol and not seen anything yet. I think my cleaner shrimp would eat anything I put in a glass but I could try it anyway.

Could nassarius snails eat a dead fish in one night and leave nothing?

I put in the glass with food but every time I checked there was nothing around. The food I think was too small and may have floated out of the glass so I will try again.

Here is a picture of a large snail that I was told was a nassarius. Could this be eating my fish?

I know of no snail that will eat fish... at least fish that are not in distress and helpless already except for cone snails. Might be some out there, but I've never heard of one in captivity.

I doubt Nassarius will eat live or even ill fish, but I'd question dead ones. I put about a half inch chunk of jumbo shrimp on a bamboo skewer in my tank 1 to 2 times a week stuck into the sand for the shrimp and nassrius. All four shrimp fight over it at first but once the three nassarius, find it they're all over it and after about an hour or so nothing's left but the stick.

That must be what happened. The fish died inexplicably after lights out at 6pm and the snails got them before lights on at 10am.

I wish I knew what the fish died from so I could maybe do something about it but without the body it is impossible to diagnose.

Is there someone who feels they can get my Copperband Butterfly to eat? I have had it about a month but it has always rejected all offered food and forages on its own. It looks thin to me.

Tried: mysis, brine, arcti-pods, meal worms, blood worms.
I have dosed: Prazi-Pro, PimaFix, MelaFix

I am proposing that an expert take the fish and get it to eat. That is why I am posting this here.
