I actually did search for the answer - But, didn't find it.

[:taz:
Beginning a 40 gallon tank. Currently in the tank: live sand, live rock and beginning the cycling process. I have 110 w pc lighting, including actinic blue (55w) that is included in the total of 110.

What anenomoes or coral are hardy enough to be in this tank?
What would you suggest for cleaners?

Thanks so much for the assistance.

[I can't reccomend any anemone with that lighting as most love intense lighting and even the BTA which are the most forgiving will likely need more than you have.

As far as corals the lighting will allow you to keep most zoanthids, mushrooms, ricordia, and other softies without issue. What do you have for circulation in the tank?]

[I have a powersweep 228, by ZooMed, rated at 270gph but it certainly doesn't feel like it is putting that much out. Will be adding additional (quiet one pump). That is exactly the information I need. If corals would be better, then that is what I'll do. I have no intentions of setting myself up for failure.]

[Wait for your cycle to completely finished. Then add a clean up crew of snails. Slowly start with some hardy corals first and build on that. Go slow and you should be fine. I would wait on adding an anenome until that tank has matured.]

[I think you could do a bta higher up in the tank...power compact lighting has good penetration and the lighting should be strong enough higher up in the tank.

As for corals, you can pretty much do anything you want to...you could even do sps, but you would really want to get metal halides for those. You could do mushrooms, zoos, and ricordea near the bottom where the light isn't as strong and you could get some brain corals, frogspawn, gsp, some softies...whatever you feel like.

For the cleaning...I would recommend getting some snails and blue or red leg hermit crabs. You chould check out Live Aquaria...they have some good "cleaning" packages and a lot of people do group buys on here to get better prices and to save on shipping.]

[Only problem with a BTA "higher up" in the tank is they move! It's going to settle where it wants so keeping it high is a challenge if not impossible task! I would also still argue it's not enough light.

I'm not disagreeing you can have a BTA under PC's. Maybe if he had 220W of PC I would agree that would be enough but 55W of daytime and 55W of Actinic on a 40G is pretty low lighting and I re!ally don't think an anemone would do well.

Also some SPS would be OK (probably montiporas and pocciliporas, maybe cat's paw) but you would be hard pressed to keep acros and most other SPS happy with that lighting! Again you could do it with PCs but tou need more if that is your goal.

I would suggest sticking with the others named as they will afford you a great opportunity for success!]

[You need to get the tank up and running for awhile and then as the parimeters all settle down, get a cleanup crew and see how they do, then next start by adding some fish that will flourish in that size tank. Then if and when you decide to keep a coral or an anemone you need to read about the care of that specific invetebrae, some need more lighting that you have and some will do fine. While power compact lighting can be used on a reeftank, having only 110 watts is not enough to keep very many high light level corals.]

[Definately need to wait for the tank to be very mature for an anemone. Also, a lot more lighting will be needed even for a BTA.

I bought 2 rose BTA's on the same day at the Pet-O-Rama grand opening November 20, 2004. One went into my 50g with 384W PC daylight plus 60W NO actinic. The other went into my 100g with 500W MH plus 110W PC actinic. For those who don't know, both tanks share the same sump, so it is the same water column, so the only major difference in habitat is the lighting. Both were always fed at the same time.

This past weekend, I moved the RBTA out of the 50g into the 100g in hopes of saving it. The RBTA that has always been in the 100g is full and beautiful, though it has lost its rosy color. The RBTA that was in the 50g is small, shrunken and shriveled. It is already starting to look a little better after just 2 days under MH.

I tried to keep the RBTA in the 50g near the top but it kept moving lower. I must have liked the water temp, or flow, or depth better but it wasn't getting enough light.]
