hurricane power outage

With the hurricane coming this way most likely, I was wondering what to do if my power goes out. I have a 24g aquapod, and 46g reef tank with chillers. What should I do to prepare for this storm if I don't have a power generater?

I have no idea what to do if the power does goes out for a decent amount of time. Everyone chip in and explain what to do for us unprepared broke reefers. Thank you.

basically your tank shouldnt get too hot with the lights out. It wont be over 85 degrees anyway. Keeping the water moving somehow is good too. A battery powered air pump is also great to have. If your in DFW you should be fine. It wont be bad up here.

the thing to worry about is the fish and them being able to breath, go to petco and grab a couple battery operated airpumps with an air stone (1 for each tank) and if the power goes out, give it 15-30 mintues and throw them on it. you will be good for a while like that.

also, if you do happen to notice things are too warm, you could freeze water tonnight in baggies to float or better yet, go to walmart and buy a battery powered fan, they are in the camping section. Place the fan over the top of the tank facing the water and you will be good to go.

As has been mentioned, run up to Wal Mart, and you can pick up some battery powered air pumps for under $10...

That's a bare minimum...

Another option, is to go get some DC-AC power inverters... Basically, a thingy that plugs into the cigarette lighter of your car, and you can then plug a small current regular outlet device into it (Like a small return pump.)

What we are doing is getting our tanks ready for a possible power outage:

First getting a UPS unit for the pumps, too late to get a generator as all the stores that I checked were out of stock on reasonable models.

We are preparing bottle water not for use in the tank but to keep the tanks cool incase of a power outage. We take the water and let a little out of the bottle to make room for expansion when freezing. Place into the freezer and then place into the tank if the power goes out. You can always drink the water afterwards so nothing is wasted.

Also topped off the gas tanks in our cars, not that I think there is going to be a shortage but a price spike.

As was mentioned.. battery backup air pumps.. you might also look at getting a UPC at a computer store and charge it overnight to run your powerheads.

Plenty of RO/DI water as a water change could be needed at some point. Maybe some battery operated fans.
