How to acclimate when there is no water?

My husband just picked up my snails from a group buy, but there is no water in the bag. What is the best way to acclimate them to my water?

They're floating in the sump right now for the temp. acclimation...

Hey Misty,

Transporting snails dry is actually better for them. When they are moist but not submerged they go into sort of hibernation. If they were in water then they would use up all the oxygen and the water would get fouled. That is why most shippers just send them with a little water and maybe some news paper. Here is how I acclimate. Yes start with a float, then add a cup of tank water, let sit/float 15 min, dump water out and add new water, let sit/float 15 min, then dump water and grab snails and put in tank. Here is a link to another sites suggested procedure as well.

It is a little different due them being almost dry. One thing I have heard in the past is to make sure the initial does of water on to the dry/moist snails is at salinity level is 1.025/26. The thought is that is what they are use to naturally so the shock will be the least. If you tank is already at that level then no big deal but if not then acclimate to tank level salinity.

Hope that helps.

most snails are sent dry. drip acclimate them. the best succes I've had is by the drip method then placing the cup in the tank let them crawl out by themselves.

I use to lose a few before I started doing it this way. just works for me good luck.

If they were sent without water, I would acclimate the bag to the tank temperature and dump them into the water asap after that. In the long run, getting them back into water asap is probably better for them than anything else. I do this with pretty much every animal that I put into my tank, except fish.

The snails you got were from Keys Critters. You float them for 20 minutes, then pour in a cup of tank water, dump it all out (to rinse them clean) and add the snails directly to your tank.

Simple, and works great.
