How often to swap out ro membrane

I live in Keller nrh southlake area how often should I swap my ro membrane the unit says every 1-3 years anyone in these areas know? I know it depends a lot on the water

I let the TDS after the membrane tell me when it's time to replace. If you replace your sediment and carbon block frequently, there's no reason the membrane shouldn't last more than 3 years IMO.

You really need to know several numbers before you can determine that. There are people that are still getting good numbers after 5+ years on the same membrane. First you need to know the tds of your water source. Second you need to know the efficiency of your membrane. Most are 95% and above. The best is the spectrapure at 99%. Lets say your source water is 200 tds and your membrane is rated at 95%. Then you should be getting 10 tds or lower after the membrane. If it is much higher it is time to replace. Just remember the better the membrane the lower you tds so that means your DI will last longer. Also it is a good idea to go with 1 micron are smaller prefilters to help protect the membrane from larger particles.

Ecko I think you are meaning after your Di Rresin. I do the same, the water after resin if it is 4 or more it gets a fresh cartridge. As for RO membrane I look for an increase in TDS from your starting point. My new membrane runs an 8 TDS. If it hits 15 I'll change it. Better to just do so every 2 years of you are worried about bad water quality.

If my TDS is ever more than 5, replace DI resin first, if still higher than 5, check and replace other stages. If its still high then its definitely your membrane or bad DI resin.

TDS meters are dirt cheap and they are very simple electonics so accuracy shouldnt be a concern.

No I mean after membrane. New membrane out is 2-3 once it goes to 5 I replace it. If after DI is 1 I replace DI.

When I lived in Plano it was twice as bad as it is here. Currently I get about 120-150 in from street. In Plano it would be from 220-350.

How often should the sediment and carbon blocks be replaced?, I bought my unit about 14 months ago and have never changed any of the filters, still getting 0 TDS water, but I can see my DI resin is about 65% used up judging by the color. Was actually thinking about replacing all 4, because I though I should be done every year, but unsure on how often each one of them needs to be replaced. I only know the DI needs a replacement when the orange-ish color is close to the top.

I have a barracuda 100 GDP, that has made only 5 gallons every week for the most part, now making about 10-15 per week for the last 6 months. TDS from the tap is usually at around 300.

The prefilters under the main bracket should be replaced every six months. They protect the membrane (on top) from chlorine damage. The DI is replaced when TDS coming out is no longer 0.

5g per week is why it has lasted you so long, but it is definitely time to change them. When you pull out the carbon filters, they will very likely smell like a swimming pool.

Tap water into my home feeding the ro/di filter is at 165 ppm. With a 95% rejection rate RO membrane there should be only 8 ppm after water passes through the membrane. If there is more than 8 ppm, the membrane is losing efficiency, and will need changing at some point.

.05 X 165 = 8.25

If there is 500 ppm tap water into the membrane, and the membrane is a 95% rejection rate membrane, there will be 25 ppm water out of the membrane. The membrane is working properly even though 25 ppm seems like a high number.

.05 X 500 = 25

I just received a full set of all 4, plus extra of each of the prefilters, was thinking about just changing the pre filters today, would that be the best approach?, if I do that how long do I let it running to get rid of particles etc?, or is there anything special you have to do after replacing them?

Just change them out. You don't have to do anything special. Assuming these are quality filters, they have been treated to be dust free. Turn on the system and make water.

Thanks Marc, I just swapped them out, and water still at 0 TDS. While doing that I decided to re-test my TDS coming out of the tap, it is actually 120-140 TDS from the tap, much better than I though. The pre-filters did not smell like chlorine or anything bad when I changed them, but definitely it was time to do it.
