How often to feed fish

[I have a 55 gallon tank with two fish.A clown and a yellow tang.I was feeding mine once a day.My LFS tells me thats way too much and I should be feeding once a week. The food tends to be eaten in a couple of minutes.]

[Hi
I used to feed mine twice a day but have cut it back to once a day. As long as the eat it all in 5 minutes I would say you are fine. Watch the algea growth if it grows fast you are feeding to much.
Just my .02

[The clown can easily go a week but the tang needs to have some kind of vegetable matter to eat at all time. You can buy sheets of nori at an asian market (much cheaper than a pet store) and use a veggie clip (available at most local fish stores) to attach it. If you can't find nori then romaine lettuce will work until you do.]

[What Bulldogger said, Tangs eat a lot, if he looks pinched in his stomach or behind his eyes you need to feed more, may be one way to judge if your feeding is adequet]

[I do feed my tang seaweed twice a week now.He eats anything I out in the tank..the guy a flakes zooplaton you name it and he eats it.I asked this because the LFS said when I told them they eat all their food in mintues the he told me well they go to the bathroom don't they?So I guess hes telling me that my nitrates will go up if I keep feeding them once a day.]

['Once you accept in your heart that you are going to get a ticket, then you can park anywhere you like' - Paula Poundstone.

Not much way you can avoid having nitrates nor phosphates, cepting maybe have ceramic or plastic fish from Kirklands or KMart.

Given that, how many fish do you want to enjoy and if you enjoy your fish, then one of the great joys is feeding your fish as theys so cute when they swim up to top and sing that great chorus from 'The Little Shop of Horrors' - "he sho' looks like plant food to me, he sho' looks like plant food to me, he sho' looks like to plant food to me, so FEED ME!"
And I do. about 3 times a day.
No dentists though...]

- she recommends feeding rbtas a silverside minnow a day then every 3 days, letting them eat their fill of silversides(?!) - how do you know...

Great link about anemones - worth the read if you have them or are considering getting some...]

[I tend to feed on the heavy side. If it is not causing you problems once a day is fine. I put Nori in for my Tang every morning and feed at night so the Tang eats twice a day.

Having said that I have left them all for several out of town trips for up to 5 days (with only a full sheet of Nori on the clip) and all were great when I got back. Went back to feeding once a day. I know several people who only feed a couple times a week. The fish they had were perfectly healthy even though they do stay smaller.

Pure matter of opinion in my opinion :D]

[I feed once a day, brine shrimp/sometimes mix with flake and add freeze dried phytoplankton. All food is gone in like 3 minutes. I give my Sailfin Tang Julian Springs sea Veggies, he tears it apart in minutes. I also do 5-10 gallon water changes a week to keep the bad algae away.]

[I feed my tank twice a day with a variety of frozen cubes. I also put nori once a day on a clip. Some days I drop one feeding, some days I add a little cyclop eeze.]

[After all the reading I have so far from all you fine ppl is feed the fish daily.Which is what I have been doing.I do feed my tang Green Marine Algae. wouldnt mind putng in a whole sheet but Mr Tang believes it needs to be all over the tank lol.I really don't have any problems feeding its just that my nitrate levels are up some.Hopefully the macroalgae I got a week ago will start to take care of this. When I feed I don't see any food left after a couple of minutes(besides the half sheet of seaweed). My nitrate levels are at 40 ppm and I have ammonia levels at .50 which suggest that I am feeding my fish too much.I have done two 80% water changes. Its a 5 month old tank and I think being my first tank I rushed alot of things.Seems like my fish are doing very well thou and the corals I have right now don't seem to be that bad off(they are opening).I guess I just feed and sit back and see what happens :sniffle:]

[I feed my fishies twice a day - but I have more fish than you do, and not many corals. My Harlequin eats like a piggie, so since he gets most of it, twice a day works for me. And the veggie eaters gets either caulerpra or seaweed sheet every other day.]
