How often do you scrape the glass/acrylic? - Algae growing on your tank...

[I'm curious about this because I was reading on reefcentral that some people only have to scrape the algae once a week! Which really amazes me because I have to scrape mine daily.

Does algae growing on the glass come from to much nutrients in the water?

]

[It can. Less nutrients, less algae growth.]

[Yeah, i have noticed that if i overfeed it gets worse. I still scrape mine everyday and it still gets dirty. They should make a motorized glass scraper that works on its own. :)]

[I voted once a week because there wasn’t a spot for more than that. Usually I will use the magnet on the front about once every two weeks and then use the metal scraper on the back (and front if need be) about once every month or so.]

[Kevin, you must never feed your tank. :p]

[I only scrape one a week. If the question was phrased "how many times SHOULD you scrape your tank?" I would have a different answer :)]

I have an automated glass cleaning system. I placed 2 magnafloats on my tank and I told my 4 yo daughter, 6 yo son and 8 yo daughter not to touch them! :smart:
I'm sure they don't but they are always in different places and the glass is always clean.]

[Same here, my glass magically cleans itself. :wwww:
and the chair always moves by itself too, right next to the tank.]

[Marc your right, because I only have five fish in a 120g and one is a Mandarin who is fat and happy thanks to your cheato that was teaming with pods. :rasp: But I also don’t have much in corals either.]

[I put 3-4 time a week. Sometimes it is longer than a week/ shorter than a day though. I have a low flow system that incorporates a plenum in the sump to break down nitrates. I think that's what keeps cleanings minimalized?

I have several fish some with huge apitites. I have to feed my (3)false percs/ (2)orange shoulder tangs at least twice a day with flake food; or not put my hand in the tank because it might not come back out. I also have a zebra and a new angel both have big appetites. The zebra eats 5 to 6 krill (larger size) 3 times every 2 weeks.

I can't keep snails long because I will be late on the zebra's feeding and will be missing a snail before the end of the day.

Here is the question I use a Jaubert system (macro-algae and plenum) 2 250 watt MH. I use a skimmer rated for 75 gallons so I have high nutrient water (no carbon/ no phosban) water changes every 2 months... how is it you all have to clean your glass so much?

If I have to clean the glass it's to get off the coralline algae off. That really needs to be done weekly but I wait for a whole month! It turns into a real ........ :very angry:]

[currently, daily... but the tank is only about 6 weeks old.

I notice a bunch of scum/dirt/algae on the glass where the turbo snails have been munching. (Can tell by the tread marks they leave in what's left behind that they've been there.)]

[I had to put in everyother day faithfully! I feed two times a day of my make up food, and once a day of flake. I also put out algae clip. But--my LFS says I'm too clean?
I have 11 fish they like to eat and I like my P/S.]

[I've fed as little as once a week. (I was on the road)

Depending on the fish they can take it.. I did kill one though.. :taz:

I usually feed every other day.. Works fine with 4 fish. I feed BTAs once every week or 2.]

[Let's try to stay on topic. This is about scraping. :D]
