How often do anemones split?

[-- title edited by Marc to make the thread useful to our search engine one day. :)]

Almost infinite amount of variables to that question, and most of them we don't even know...

Species of anemone - Some rarely, if ever split, being the biggest...

Of the "frequent splitter" varieties, some theorize that they split when they're healthy, to increase their numbers. However, there's another school of thought that believes they split when they're extremely unhealthy, and "think" they're dieing, to increase their chances of survival.

I personally subscribe to the 2nd theory, which would explain why we so often see splits after large water changes, or when a specimen has been moved (Which, from the animal's point of view is pretty similiar to a large water change).

I've got a green BTA that I've had for around 7 years now... It used to split on me at least once every 3 months, like clockwork, for years...

It's been in the dedicated anemone display tank for a year or so now, and hasn't split a single time.

So, in summary... There's really no way to know how often a particular anemone will split, or why they do either. Some anemones will split often (every 2 months or so) for some people, and never split for someone else...

(Disclaimer - I'm not saying people who have frequent anemone splits have bad tanks, please don't misunderestimate my comments! :) )

In May I had the temp of my anemone tank spike up to 86 degrees 2 days in a row. I had an anemone split in each of those 2 days.
I think they split b/c they stressed about the temp getting s high. I have considered attempting to induce a split in the same manner, but I'm scared I will kill the anemone.

Maybe you are both right. This nem. stays at the top of the tank. So when i do a water change he just hangs there until i rapidly get the fresh water back in the tank. I recently did a water change, and also had a temp. spike..82

one of my nems just split (the other one is mostly hiding in the rocks)

My temp sits right at 80. I don't have a chiller and I keep the house around 78. A vent blows right down into the tank and I have a fan for evaporation.

So, the warm temperation/stressed nem theory sounds pretty good. Despite the the fact that the nem that split routinely spreads out to over 10" in the light. It didn't really look stressed.

Who the hell knows.

Today I had my BTA anemone split. I won it at the last meeting. My water quality is excellent, and in fact I just did a small water change on Sunday. My temp has been pushing around 82 degrees and he is high up in the rocks getting alot of light so Im not sure if he was stressed. I am working on trying to keep my temps a little lower. It was kind of cool to see 2 anemones though when I walked by tonight. They both look great and never looked sick.
