How long Corals can live without water

Does anyone know how long corals can live without water. The question I am asking is because I have some corals on top rocks which might be out of water during the water change. By the way I have started out my tank with just Polyps.

I expose my zoanthids on my overflow box as well as some SPS during water changes for about 10 minutes and have not had any problems.

I am much happier after getting a pump to assist in putting the new saltwater into the system.

One thing you have to keep in mind when exposing corals outside of water, is that there could be small fish in that same rock. I always had blennies and smaller wrasses and such that would live in rocks at the top of my rocks. When I did water changes they would be out of the water for awhile and I would have to rush the water change. Well now on my new setup, I do a water change out of my sump so that the water level in my display never goes down.

like Scott said reef flats in Fiji (populated by sps, softies, etc. as well as fish and inverts) are exposed to the air at low tide for hours at a time every day. If you have any wild-caught corals they were probably exposed on a dock or the deck of a boat for a few hours before being put back into water. So, you're definitely okay with leaving them exposed for a while.

With the notable exception of some sponges which if exposed to air will die, I think what everyone told you is correct. Some corals are exposed for hours at low tide. Not every genus and species but some. But its not like most were not out of water at various points in their journey on the way to your tank. Minimize the time exposed to minimize the stress on the coral.
