How does anything survive in these tanks

LOL... I lost count of all the "don'ts" I saw. My favorite moment was at 3:20 when it said add water... I said to myself, "here comes the hose"... 5 seconds later... there's the hose. [smilie=rofl.gif] [smilie=rofl.gif]

70s that was the norm. Did fine for years.

Dolomite base, dead bleached rock, Vortex diatom filters to keep water sparkling clear.

40 w grow lights.

Worked then, and depending on what you have in the tank works fine now.

Matt is right there are alot off people doing it this way and don't know any better. Its just as much the person doing its fault as it is the store employee.

I understand that many do it and that they can be successful to an extent. The sad part really is that the guy put it on youtube with the title "how to start a saltwater tank from start to finish", has gotten 81k hits, and has disabled comments so there is no way for viewers to know that no best practices are shown in the video..

Its not how I would do it, but like it was said before, it works. If the person stays on top of the water changes and doesnt go nuts with the fish population it will work.

I have seen nice tanks that use tap water: xenia, shrooms, zoas, softies. Personally I totally disagree with it but to each his/her own. It would be nice if it were truly this easy.

No reason why you can't filter out tap water with some phosguard and chemipure. It may be quicker than running say 105 gallons though an RO/DI unit if not cheaper assuming you don't have the unit. :p

I don't want to be critical, since my 1st saltwater tank was done the same way...lol. I did not know any better and did not take the time to research. After I lost some nice fish, I realized something was wrong. Did my research and got better with time and experience. I'm sure this guy is probably going to follow a similar path if he stays in the hobby !! It's all about learning as we go. I do feel bad for the losses incured from these type of mistakes, but lets keep it real, the long supply chain to the LFS is not that perfect either !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
