What is the minimum safe distance from the water a MH light should be?
sorry for the dumb question, but I am trying to get a hood design in mind, and the tank and stand i have are already quite tall.

depends on your reflectors and watts, what will you be using? i have lumenbrights and bulbs are 18" off the water and i get great par to the sand with 250 watters

two 175w and one 250w with polished al. reflectors.
then some t5s, and florescent altenics.

I usually make the canopies 12" tall. With the 1-2" lip on the tank the bulbs sit at about 8-9" above the water which is about perfect.
