HOB VS. In the Stand Setup

Alright -- so I have posted some things and somethings I haven't.

I'm in the process of setting up my first salt water aquarium, new to the hobby. I have gotten myself the most important thing, the tank and stand. Now comes the rest. I am trying to decide which set up is best. As I don't have a RR tank.

I could get everything where it is all HOB for the tank, or I could put everything under the tank in the stand. I'm having a hard time figuring out what type of setup that I want. I know that even if it is not a RR Tank, that I can pretty much make it look need and close to the wall as possible by having my setup underneath the tank.

However, I don't have all the money in the world either, so I am trying to figure out what would be the best way when shopping for my parts. Figured, I would turn to you folks who have had your fair share of setting up before and after RR tanks became available and all that fun stuff.

Looking forward to your outlook on this... thanks!

Well I have a 55g NRR and I have a HOB Skimmer and Fuge. I have also bought items to put everything under the tank but having limited space under If you want to go that way do it prior to setting everything up. I will go RR on my next tank due to the functionality. With everything under the tank it looks cleaner and also I am trying to figure out how to set up an ATO unit. The good thing is that there are many options and ways to do things.

What do you want to have in the tank? What size tank are you looking to purchase? If you plan on corals go for the RR tank for sure, they are cleaner set ups and are great for nutrient export with a refugium and a deep sand bed. Your better skimmers are in sump or out of sump(dry). Most hang on back skimmers are just adequate. This also depends onthe size tank you are getting. I could go on but you need to give some more info to us for advice. :D

I'm also new but I went with the under tank fuge. This allowed for me to go larger than need for my tank size as well as you can have a sump mounted skimmer , pumps all in one spot and it's all out of sight except for the overflow. I would go with a good overflow and not some cheap version off eBay or LFS and the CPR overflow with a lifter pump would be a good combo for a non reef tank.

Alright -- so here is the info one asked for.

I have a 100gal tank nonRR ready and stand. I can get a sump + refugium combo custom made with no problem at all there. But, I wasn't for sure which way to go as things can be hard to figure out when first starting out.

I'm the type of person doesn't like to see cords everywhere. I like to hide them when possible, sometimes not possible but you can make them clean and neat looking.

You sound like me about things being out of sight. You can get a 30 gallon tank and setip your own dividers to make a nice fuge much cheaper than you can buy one. I built mine for $180 and that is using all glass and having it cut just put it together.
