Help with parasites!!

Ok after entering the hobby about 10 months ago parasites have killed my tank. I am starting over refusing to give up on something I really enjoy. What do the guys that have these huge tanks do to reduce the parasite factor. I know to quarantine fish for 2-4 weeks but what else. Is there any semi-fool proof system to reducing the risk of catching the dreadful Ich or saltwater velvet??? I would like all the input I can get! Also, how big of a QT tank should I get and if I setup a reef tank will the QT need proper lighting, skimmer and flow also???

Thanks for helping a NOOB!

qt should take care of it, also be careful where you get things...if thier tanks and livestock do not look good, do not buy...

i have a 20 long and a 20 high, depenidng on fish i get...i have 2 clowns in the 20 long right now...doing well...i keep a maxi 1200 to put in there for flow, a small well cured LR piece, small fake plant for something to hide in, a 2" pvc 'T' and a small heater just in case

lots of reading on how to do them, just read up as mucha s you can...

semi fool proof and there is a ton of discussion on the subject is to have your tank fallow (or without fish) for 6 weeks and hypo treat all fish including new comers for 6 weeks.

things that help:

Garlic - improves immune system

Stress free environment - don't over stock, provide hiding spaces, compatability, diet, natural lighting schedules, etc

Clean enviroment - run carbon, low phosphate, low nitrate etc low, water changes

Sterilize, by UV or Ozone - kills some parasites when present in the water column

Parasite predators - cleaner shrimp
