Help With Algae ID

I have a few bunches of this short, green velvety algae popping up on my rocks. It is almost impossible to pluck it off. Is this another phase of new tank syndrome or is it something I need to remove? Thanks in advance! Candace

If you want to pass the rock to me for a day my rabbit fish will clean it for you. Not saying that it will cure it but he will mow anything green down

Hi Lance,

I have a fox face and sailfin tang that nibble on some of the green stuff - but not the fuzzy patches in the picture. I would have to tear the whole tank apart to remove the rocks that are affected - I wish I could borrow your fish!

I've been reading on the DFWMAS forum tonight about raising the magnesium to 1600 to help. Wonder if getting a lawnmower blenny would help too? I've got a phosphate sponge in the sump just in case even though my phosphate tests zero. I use RO/DI water to mix salt water and to top off. My TDS meter reads 1. Not sure where I picked up this algae....Candace

LOL...........my rabbit eats Cheato!!! It is too funny to watch him. I have also heard that. May have been hiding in the rock. I noticed last night that I have a small stalk of aptisa in the tank and have not had any for over a year but have picked up a few frags in the past few months and figure that is the gamble we take. Good luck on clenaing it up.

I pulled off a tuft - it's about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long. This is what it looks like...

I had a hard time getting it off the rock - it's really stuck on there. If it is Maiden's Hair, why would someone want that in their tank? I see it for sale on DFS and LiveAquaria? Candace

Thats the same stuff that i have in my nano. It turns white overnight and bright green within an hour of the lights coming back on. Its kinda cool looking, but i would not want it all over my tank!
