Help me setup my sulfur denitrifier

I have a nice denitrifier thats been sitting and I want to put to use. I wanted to go the pellet route but since I already have this setup and brand new media, I figure I might as well give it a try. Everything I read says I need some kind of CA supplementation in the reactor or near it. Also I have read once you have the reactor primed and doing good you don't want to disturb it so to me this is contradictive as you'd have to disturb it to add Ca media to the top?

My idea is to setup my sulfur reactor like normal and put a two little fishes reactor on the output side with Ca media. This way I can remove it and add as needed without disturbing the sulfur reactor. Any advice or tips on this?

Like I said, I think I'd prefer to go pellets but at this point its not worth trying to sell all my equipment so I am willing to try to sulfur.

I have a sulfur denitrator, on mine you fill the reactor up with a half and half mixture seperated with a foam pad. Check out the setup here. http://www.midwestaquatic.com/MANUALS/SULFUR%20DeNITRIFIER%20INSTRUCTION%20MANUAL.pdf

Thanks Ron,

I looked at these directions and mine looks basically like this. Would there be a problem just putting sulfur in the reactor and having it go through a second reactor with the Ca media in it? I wouldn't think it would matter but would rather leave the sulphur be once it is going rather than taking any chances.

Hi,

Some good info here on running these, do take a moment to read thru this before setting yours up. [smilie=smile.gif]

thanks for the link, hadn't seen that one. I've read a ton of 10-20 page threads about them, but they all always use the Ca media on top of the sulfur in the reactor. I don't see why it would be any different if I just put it in a different reactor but wanted to see what others inputs were on it. I'll probably try to get it going in the next week or so.

Is there any rule of thumb of how much sulfur media to a certain sized tank?

The media and sulfur in the main reactor has water constantly being circulated thru it. The sulfur will reduce ph/alk which is mitigated via the ca media, the effluent out ot the reactor is in drops and not a steady stream so I don't think you will get the same effect with a external canister for the calcium media. Without the additional contact time provived with the recirc in the main reactor, it would seem like the ph coming out will be a bit lower. I'll see if I can dig up some more info but keep in mind that there must be a reason it's setup that way.

edited...found someone doing the second chamber but no updated status on how it worked. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1266220&highlight=denitrator

good point. I may just put the Ca media in it too and quit fighting it. I got this setup used when I bought a complete system and he had it full of sulfur and nothing else. said he had ran it for 2-3 years without touching it and having great results. It doesn't have the little dividing filter like the midwest but everything else looks the same.

I may just try to find a way to seperate it and put the Ca media on top. Thanks for the help! We are powerless here tonight so I'm watching the tank until the power comes back....good time for research!

You can use thick type of crushed coral. Alot cheaper than buying ca media

The midwest unit was a knockoff of the Korallin unit so you can buy filter pad's and part's for it online.

thanks, I will measure mine to see what size it is. If its the same size or near it I'll get some ordered.
