As I posted in the reef forum, I lost most of my fish while on vacation. I checked water parameters and in each of the tanks where I lost all the fish, the nitrates were through the roof (as in off the scale).
I have one false percula in my 12 gallon nano who has survived the ordeal. I've done 2 50% water changes and yet the nitrates still read somewhere around at least 80 (maybe down a notch from the highest reading on the card of 160).
My current concern (other than nitrate issue) is he appears to have an abrasion on his torso. It actually looks better today than it did yesterday but I thought it should be treated with antibiotics. I started ripping down my qt tank so that I could sterilize it and reset it up yesterday when I turned around and looked in the nano and thought this fish was dead. I went to remove him and he shot through the water like a bullet - I thought it looked like the last burst of energy a fish has when its dieing so I quit worrying about setting up the qt. Yet this morning the fish was swimming around fine.
The fish acts the same way when I do water changes. My dilemma now is if I should leave him where he is and continue water changes, or move him to a qt and probably stress him further. Would it be possible to treat him in the nano with antibiotics - I could pull out the live rock and just leave in the sand.
Any suggestions?
