Help me plan this long shallow nano

For those that remember me ... I have several setups over the years ... I took a nice break and have the itch to setup a new system .... Here are my thoughts
1. Long shallow tank ... 48x14x12 (lwh) ... Low iron glass on the front ... Rimless with black silicone
2. At one end create a dsb/mangrove section that is separated from the rest of the tank by a dividing piece of glass with overflows ... So when looking at the tank the right side has a 12" section separated with glass ... Return from sump flows from corner across dsb and mangroves and then through the overflow teeth to the display section which is 36" long
3. Main section is bare bottom with high flow - vortech or tunzes
4. Houses 5-6 sps colonies only ... Minimal rock work ... Focus on growth only
5. Lighting is by a 36" dim able ati sun power ... One spotlight led on mangrove section
6. High quality skimmer - which one ?? - long sump with areas for detritus traps ... Eheim or tunze return pump
7. ATo setup and dose 3 part
8. Low fish load ... 2-4 wrasses
9. Sps would be ... Oregon tort ... Green slimer ... Purple plasma ... Red and blue milli ... Red planet ... M setosa

I know some of these ideas are probably crap but I would love to hear your feedback

That was a short break. [smilie=lol.gif] I like everything from #2 down. [smilie=smile.gif] Cheers said:
Well one of my longer breaks :) ... Tank dims aren't for everyone

as the plan evolves ... tank will stay the same dimensions ... but, I am going to keep the whole tank open ... no dsb on the top section ... return will be in the R side with 2 mp40's (or some flow pump) with an overflow on the left rear corner ... I am hopeful to have a custom LED/t5 fixture built ...

I am continuing to work out the details on the tank ... we have settled on the dimensions of the tank ... 56" long, 14" wide, 12" tall ... low iron glass on front and left side ... 3/4" schedule 80 bulkhead in right end for return ... 1" sch 80 with overflow box on the left rear corner overflow box ... barebottom ...

Update: I have placed the order with David Varela (dvups1) for the tank build ... he has built numerous tanks for me in the past, and, his work is always top notch ... 1/2" glass all the way around, 56" long, 14" wide and 12" tall ... rimless with black silicone ... starphire on front and one end ... black out back and one end ... external overflow with dual drains ... build time is 6 to 7 weeks ...

im looking forward to seeing this. I love shallow rimless tanks. said:
Thanks Dave ... I think it will turn out pretty cool ... I need to figure out the lighting though as I really need LEDs to make the LPS pop but I don't need the amount of light fixtures like AI put out ... I hope I can get someone to build me a very clean and sleek custom LED fixture

Personally just get the ai Vegas just turn them down. It will be easier to resell them over a fixture that has very few leds

If I were building a custom LED fixture that would be visible, I'd seriously consider ordering the heatsink setup from here: http://www.ledgroupbuy.com/makersled-designer-heatsink-kit-professional-grade/

It's very professional looking and includes the fans and acrylic splash shields. You'd still need to get the actual LEDs and drivers from someplace like Steve's or Rapid. But that heatsink even has a way to mount the Meanwell drivers on the back side of it.

They aren't cheap, though. For a 48" heatsink you're looking at about $200, but it's about the nicest looking option I've seen for DIY.

Hmm good point

Here is a rough sketch of the tank dimensions ...

what are you going to be using for power heads and the placement on the abs side you need to go with something that holds through 1" glass. I had to buy the bigger magnets for my 6105's as the standard magnets would not hold throught the abs and 1/2' glass

Mp10's would be great on that tank but I dont think they would hold well on 1/2" glass. Mine holds on my 3/8" tank but any more and it probably wont. Might have to use mp40's.

An ATI sunpower 4x54watt would work great on that tank if you can go without LED's.

At this point, I am not planning on any powerheads on the back wall ... even though I haven't been thrilled with the consistency of the vortechs, I am planning on a mp40 for flow ... I had considered tunze, but, I really want the clean look that I can get with the vortechs ... I just wish they would re-design the mp40 to mimic the mp60
