Help! Goldfish has a lump!

My goldfish has a lump on her left side. If you recognize what this is and how I can treat it, please let me know!

We noticed the lump yesterday. It is slightly larger presently than the pictures I have posted on flickr. I don't know if this is a tumor or a bacterial infection and would appreciate any advice!

My tank is currently 76 deg, usually stays at 78. I have three other golds and a plecosthemus in a 30 gall tank. My filter is an Emperor 280 (behind tank with a bio wheel.) I did a 10% water change and after noticing the lump. The water was high in Nitrates, so I added bacteria, and the water also had a high hardness factor. (No change was made for this - yet). Please reply with any advice on how I can save my fish!!

the poor thing! don't mind these guys. they are really just playing around. or atleast i would hope so. :)

i used to have a 55 gallon of beautiful fancy goldfish too! i never had one with a mass on it though. it may very well be a parasite of some sort. the lady that bought my old freshwater tank highly recommended this site if i ever got another freshwater tank. you may have more luck there since this is for marine fish. good luck to you for sure and let me know what you find out as i am very curious!

here's the site:

Thanks for your replies.

Matt, yes my goldfish does have stringy poo. I'm not sure whether that's indicative of a parasite or a tumor, though. I've read a little about how to treat parasites with salt or a potassium permanganate, but the information I find on tumors seems pretty grim. If you're aware of a resource I could use to diagnose or treat her in the event it is a tumor, then I would be appreciative.

Mandy, thanks for your referral to the freshwater forum. I'll post over there as well.

you dont have to convert to sw or reef but at least african cichlids. but in my fw days i have found that soaking food in concentrated metro solution will do the trick very well if the fish will eat if not then when you pour it in the meds go into the tank anyways.
