Help external pumps are to loud when the house is quiet!

I've installed two pumps external to my refugium trying to minimize heat sources in my new setup. The Quiet One pumps are somewhat loud the hum. I have two ideas which involve rerouting the pumps into an isolated 2 gallon tank to submerge the pumps. I can either reroute using the bulk heads or route the pipe up and over keeping the pipe isolated from the refugium. Maybe it’s the resonance noise from the close connection of the pumps to the refugium. I would prefer not to have to put the pumps into the refugium which may be a little overkill but the pumps are warm. Suggestions?

Here are a couple things that help deaden pump noise:

Put the pumps on a piece of foam rubber or carpet

Line the inside of the stand with insulation or other sound deadening material like a foam mattress pad



If it’s a vibration issue, sometimes adding a small run of tubing to the suction and discharge close to the pump helps. The tubing provides some flexibility cutting down on the vibration noise that is transmitted into the hard pipe, refuge wall etc.
 
Thanks for the suggestions I like the add tubbing idea etween the pump and the refug. I guess I can experiment by throwing some kind of foam around the doors and walls. The pump is already on a small pieces of rubber matt.
 
before cutting up your pipe - if those are threaded unions I would take them out and add some threaded tubing connectors. The existing configuration may be a little bit short though.

Another way to posibly tell if your getting a low frequency vibration hum in your pipes and fuge is to hold the pipe and see if the noise drops any. This doesn't always work, but if it does, there is a good chance your getting vibration noise from the pipes
 
I have a Mag5 in my sump and was surprised by just putting a square piece of thick filter pad underneath quieted down the resonance hum into the stand.

Your mileage may vary...

In line with the put a piece of foam under the pumps idea, the old fashion cheap mouse pads work great for this too...

Also, if this is all new plumbing, the pipes themselves will make some noise from the water going through it. Within a few weeks everything in there will get a nice slime coating which will help quiet the plumbing down at least...
