Hi there,
My wife and I are fairly new to this hobby and we are excited to be joining DFWMAS so we can learn. We have a 100 gal established reef tank with about 10 fish, some inverts, and some coral. We purchased the setup used and managed to move it with no losses. Everything has been up and running for three weeks and all is good.

Unfortunately, we recently lost our kole tang and box anthias while we were away on vacation. We aren't sure what happened, though there was apparently a brief power outage. We had competent help maintaining the tank while we were away.

One of our clowns also has some small white spots on the top of him. We're not sure if it's saltwater Ich or maybe Brooklynella?

We've already done a 10% water change and tested all of the usual chemical levels... no ammonia or nitrite, etc.

Any thoughts on what to do? We've thought about a "hospital" tank but we're not sure what's best at this point.

Thanks for the help...

Greetings!

I hope that nitrates are 0, or near it, as well, and that salinity (specific gravity), calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium are at their proper levels, too!

I personally would soak the fishes food in Reef Plus, or some other vitamin/amino acid supplement that will boost the fishes immune system. My limited experience tells me this simple step works.

Soak your mysis in Garlic juice prior to feeding. Suppose to boost appetite and provide for healthier fish. Fish can die all of a sudden without fault of the owner. Keep your fish healthy and they will have a greater chance of fighting off disease. 10% water change in a 100 gallon tank is actually quite small. Be prepared to do at least 25% water changes.

Good luck and welcome aboard. Tremendous benefits to becoming a member as well......

alt=""> to the forum a great place to get all your questions answered.

We just started using garlic to soak the food and some vitamins as well (Kent Zoe).
Do we need to do another water change? Should we "hospitalize" the clown? How do we do that and what should we treat him with?
More #s... SG - 1.023, Amm - 0, Nitrite - 0, Nitrate - 0, KH - 7, Phos - 0.1
Should we be concerned about the other fish? What should we do? Thanks again.

From my limited experience, I say feed all your fish together right where they are at! Removing fish from display tanks can be very stressful for fish, and can be counterproductive to what you are trying to do. As I understand it, fish with healthy immune systems won't get ich. But maybe someone else has a different perspective.

1.023 is also pretty low. i would suggest topping off with saltwater instead of RO until you are at 1.026
