heat issue solutions?

Hello,

Today I purchased a 90 gallon used aquarium from saltwater paradise. Since it was set up today the temp has been at about 84.4 during the day and since have cooled to about 83.5 right one (10:35 pm). There is two fans one blowing into the hood, one blowing out of the back of the hood both are (4.5 inch fans) . It also came with what I'm assuming T5 lighting (only 4 bulbs). Will it be safe to run the aquarium at 84? What other inexpensive things can I do to lower the temp? Will adding two additional fans be of benefit or upgrading the two I have already to two larger ones? I want to stay away from a chiller as much as possible. Thanks.

Lol its actually not too bad with fans going. I just moved here so I'm unsure what to set my thermostat to. Figuring high and comfortable is good.

I'd die if it was 81. We keep it at 72 in the house and our chiller still comes on. Matt said:

I'd turn the ac down!! Try running it at 78 and see what you get. I run ours at 76. Tanks stay around 77-80 depending on what tank.

Fans can only do so much. If your ambient temp is 81, the tank temp probably will stay between 82-84 no matter how many fans you have. I'm not saying to run your ac at 72. But you may need to adjust it a bit.

You need to set a goal temp and work towards that. Ours is 79. I keep the house 72 for my personal comfort and because I don't like fans blowing all over the place. It kills my allergies. :)

Since your tank is just setup and cycling, you can run the tank warm without issues. When it is time to add fish and corals, you will need to drop the temp. Till the time is right, you can keep the house any temp you want.

If house is 81 degrees your tank temp will never go below that no matter how many fans you add you will need to add a chiller or lower your ac temp and run the fans you have

Lowering the a/c a couple degrees is going to be cheaper than buying and running a chiller, considering the heat the chiller puts off, that is going to make your a/c run more anyway.

Thanks for the help. I turned the ac down to 79 this morning before I headed out to work. Lets see where this puts me. It was at 80.3 this working when I woke up. I don't have a heater at the moment which is something that need to pick up. Will (1) 300 and (1) 30 watt heaters do? It's a 90 gallon plus about a 20 gallon sump so 110 gallons total at 3 watts per gallon which put me at 330? Or will I need something lower since my tank runs a bit warm already? Trying to get it stable around 78-79 is my goal.

How much live rock do you have? The more you have, the less total water volume you have due to displacement. A deep sand bed affects total water volume too.

Are you running your lights currently? Are you running power heads also? And last what brand return pump you using?

I have about 90lbs give or take a few pounds here and there. I have about a 1-2 inch sand bed about the same amount in the sump.

I am running lights from 2 pm-10 pm. It's I'm assuming a 4 bulb T5. I have 1 power head and return pump I am unsure what brand.

I found this while doing research... Thought it may help and/or have ideas...
i have used the ice bags before and it works... in a pinch... obviously not a long term solution.

In the Air Ducts there are dampers... you can adjust for more airflow in that room.
Also adjust and/or turn your vent so it hits the tank..

i keep my house at 75 day / 73 night... the tank still gets warmer then i would like...
Right now i have my sump open with a fan blowing into it as my lights are on..

Short of buying a chiller i will just need to keep a eye on it and adjust as needed. Until i buy one..

Thanks for the link its very insightful. I've lowered my home ac unit lower. So lets see where it gets down to.

On another note... .. I have gathered LOTS of those BIG 32 OZ plastic cups.
I filled them with Pure water and put them in the Beer frig freezer..

Basically i am making BIG pure ice cubes to be able to put into the sump area if needed...

I work from home and my tank is in my office... Watching the water parms is no issue for me...
