Hang on protein skimmer.

[HI, FOLKS,

does any one know what the best brand name for hang on protein skimmer?, i want to use it for my 46g tank. If you have one that you dont want to use. Please, drop me a line.
ONe more question: i want my 46g to be a FOLR tank. Can i use the Magnum canister and protein skimmer? and what kind of light do i need? can i use the light that comes with the tank? Thanks for your suggestions.]

[For Hang On Protein Skimmers, many approve of the Aqua C Remora, and for larger tanks the Remora Pro.

A FOWLR tank can have a canister filter if you like, but you should be prepared to crack open the canister weekly to clean out the pads in there as they tend to generate nitrate. You don't need a lot of light since it is FO, so NO, PC, or VHOs would be fine. You can probaly find some at a good price in the For Sale forum.]

[I'm just starting my tank and found a great deal on eBay on a Sea Clone 100. I thought that it looked kinda dinky, but it performs great. I'm running it with a Maxi-Jet 1200 power head and the venturi that came with the power head. I ended up getting the Skimmer for $20 plus shipping. Definately search on this forum as well. Also, since I only have a cleaner crew and a starfish, I'm running a Rena filstar xP3 canister filter. Everyone recommends against using the filter, but if you keep up the cleaning, like once or twice a week cleaning, it works great. I got this one for the LFS for $90. I think that this one is a little big for your tank, but a smaller one would work.

[FWIW, I don't like the Seaclone at all. I had one on my 55g, and was really aggravated by its lack of production. I felt like I was wasting electricity just powering the pump on that skimmer.

I made it my personal mission to buy them up one by one, to get them off the market permanently.

That is a joke, btw. But I don't like 'em. Get the Remora, you won't regret it.]

I have a hob filter /skimmer i had bought for a 29 gallon project that never took off, it comes with ca 800 pump , new and never used, is rated up to 100+ gallon tank $50 to fellow rowlett(er). you can come by and see it before buying too.
I also have a remora skimmer, that fell while cleaning, made a crack that i have repaired with weld-on, doesnt leak.]

[I bought mine, and added a Maxi Jet 1200 and a larger venturi setup, so it would produce better...so I cant speak for a stock one...my only complaint is the micro bubbles, it may find a home in my sump, once I get it up and running.

I agree though that the seaclone is not the best out there, but for $20, I'm not complaining

[I have a seaclone as well...It was one of the first things that I bought for my tank and I've hated it ever since. The one thing about this hobby is that you just can't cheap out on certain things. Just like you can't substitute a "Hydrox" for an "Oreo Cookie", you can't always grab those cheaper deals on skimmers and lights. I learned the hard way and I keep dumping money into new equipment that I bought back in the "I didn't know better" phase of reefing. I'm still using the seaclone until I can get a new one, but I chose to upgrade my PC lights to MH first.]

[Like traveler said, do it right the first time. The only thing I've cheaped out on is the skimmer, but I don't have anyting but snails and a starfish in my tank right now...]
