Hang on Overflows

I am curious to find out what problems are out there for hang on overflows. I've heard some good things and some bad things about them. Hopefully the good outweigh the bad?

What are problems that people have with these overflows?

TIA

As far as I have researched... the lifereef overflows are one of the best in the business. I am putting one on my 36g corner. They swear by them they will never fail.

I have used quite a few different brands and the lifereef is the best i have used but they are VERY pricey compared to others. I have had the best luck with u-tube types. Another good one that is a little more reasonable is amiracle.

A big mistake i see is people dont use a large enough return pump and bubbles dont get pushed through when they build up in the utube. IMO you want to get your return pushing right around what the overflow can handle. If you don't want to run a lot of water through your sump you can get smaller diameter utubes. I only push about 150 gph through the sump on my 30 so i have a 1/2 tube.

I have been wondering about this question for bigger systems, where people put the overflows outside the tank for asthetic reasons, so they will have more room inside the tank. I'm curious for 180 gallons and up size.

Anybody have any experience/advice along those lines, pics?
