Halide Failure

Thought some would be interested. A bit of the metal bar liquefied, dropped on to the outer bulb and melted through. The glass panel in the fixture stopped it from entering the tank. I wish I had been there to see it.

Never seen that type of failure before. What brand of bulb is that? What did it cost?

It's a 1KW ushio 20000K. $200 bulb. I think I'll stick with the Hamilton 14000K from now on. The ushio had a slightly violent tint, which was interesting, but I had trouble with it lighting from day one.

Wow, 1000w? People were giving me a hard time for using 400w over my reef. :) Sorry about the bulb failure. Think they may warranty it?

Yeah, 1KW is a bit overkill even for a near 3' deep tank. Most of the day the bulbs are running at 600W. They are at 1KW for only a couple hours per day.

If I had it to do again, I'd go with the same overall power, but I'd use 400W bulbs--just more of them.

They might warranty it. I think I've had it for only 3 months. Probably worth a shot.
