A growth sequence of one coral in my tank...

I got this coral a year ago, right before Next Wave when Steve Tyree came to talk to the club.

Nine months later, I find what's left of it in the rockwork, and mounted it to a new spot where I could observe it.

I switched from XM to ReefLux bulbs at this point. The coral's color changes accordingly.

Excluding the March 06 picture, every image was taken the same way with the same amount of zoom, the lens pressed against the glass. As you can see in the April 06 shot, it is almost able to completely fill the frame. Finally.

I'll keep updating this thread as the coral grows.

I got a reply from Steve tonight. He confirms this is a Shawn Bennet Valida, or Acropora valida. For months, I've received many opinions from others about what its name was. Now we know for sure.

It seems some people from South Texas like to call this coral the "Texas Purple Monster". alt=""> said:
I pm'ed this guy several times inquiring about the frags he was selling from this colony. He said he sell two 1" frags for $40, which I thought was a great deal.

I tried to get his paypal information and he never returned my pm's. I still haven't been able to get a hold of him.

If any of you want to try, his name on http://www.maast.org is aquadoc. Let me know if you get a hold of him.

I miss my Valida. I grew it from an encrustation the size of a dime to a colony the size of a softball. Then it died on the move up here to Arlington :( .

At this point, the same coral no longer fits in the full frame of the lens when zoomed in in macro mode.

And from above slightly, to see the 'colony'.

A couple of tiny pieces were recently broken off, but I'm not about to waste any of this coral's potential, so they were glued to a new rock.

I feel your pain. I grew out a frag the size of Marc's in the first picture to the size of a football. It took 5 years to do! I left it in a babysitters system. THe system introduced redbugs (I had never had them prior to that) and I suspect that maybe there were AEFW's? The colony died really fast in this persons system after continuing to grow under extreme conditions. RIP *Marc please post a picture of it that you have archived*

That is a very nice looking coral Marc. Those babies are going to be looking for a new home soon.

I think the babies are goners unfortunately. They were fine, then somebody flipped them over against the mushrooms. I saw it and put it back in place, and the next day they were back on the mushrooms again. I placed it in my prop section instead where it could be safe, but I think they are gonna be a total loss. Argh.

I'll try again with some other frags in the near future.

Ryan, I keep all my images. Can you give me a relative date and I can start hunting? Is this when I took pictures at SP?

Due to the acropora eating flatworms discovered on this coral last month, this thread may have to wait a while for further growth shots. Here are the details regarding the AEFW and what they look like:

And here is the coral as of this month. Hopefully it'll heal up and regain its color again. The polyps are out, so that is a good sign.

That sucks that such a pretty piece had AEFW's. I'm glad it's showing signs of PE. Hopefully it will recover and start showing great color again.

At least you were able to treat it before the whole colony was destroyed.
