Green Algae

Hey Guys...need some help.

I have a green fuzz that I cannot seem to get rid of. I guess you could call it hair algae, but it is not very long. It just looks like a green fuzz over the entire tank.

Here are my water test results and other misc info that I imagine you would want to know...

SG - 1.025
PH - 8.2
Nitrite - 0 ppm
Nitrate - 0 ppm
Ammonia - 0 ppm
dKh - 11.2
phosphate - 0 ppm
Cal - 200 ppm

I recently changed three of the four bulbs running in the tank - here is the breakdown:
2 - 420 actnic - new on 12/10
1 - 10000K UVI - new on 12/15
1 - 18000K - old - in use since around 5/2008

Everybody seems healthy and happy, but I just want the blah to go away...any thoughts? I'm including some pictures - sorry the quality is not any better.

Thanks and Merry Christmas

Is it really soft? I think that would be bryopsis. Dosing with Kent Tech-M to get the magnesium level around 1900 for a week or so should knock it down.

It's not the magnesium, but an 'unknown ingredient' in Tech-M that seems to do it.

If your CA is really 200 you are not " reef ready " . I'd be careful dosing MG if your CA is that low as you may be out of balance. At a min you CA should be 350 .

working to bring the calcium up using Kent Liquid Cal but it does not seem to increase quickly. I'm dosing the recommended amount several times a week.

For the last 6 months I've been using Kent Mag to dose once a week as a week supplement.

Thanks for not taking a "cheep shot" at the new guys ridiculous handle... :?

More thoughts?

Do I need to hold off on the Kent treatment recommended above until I get the Cal up? Should I begin dosing Cal daily until I get it to acceptable limits?

Thanks,
not ReefReady....

First rule in dosing is don't if you can't measure it. Do you have a MG test kit ? MG will also affect SG .

ok...so you caught me on that one - I've been dosing the maintenance weekly of Mag based on recommendation by LFS. I was planning to get a test when I got the Kent Tech mentioned earlier in the post.

More thoughts...

I would recommend you get the salifert MG test kit as opposed to like the API.

Continue your current CA dosing regiment. Test your CA levels every other day for a week to determine what your tank is using in CA. Then increase your dosing per your results. I.E. If you are dosing every 3 days 2 capfuls and the CA is staying steady then go 2 capfuls every other day. You want to do smaller doses more often versus a large dose occasionally. Once your CA is under control then start on other items. Also after doing this, once the CA is leveled off you'll have a pretty good idea what to dose at for your water maintenance program.
